  1. People often think that #thujas are sterile #hedges without any life. But you can leave gaps in a #thuja #hedge for native bushes or use them as a climbing help - like for this #rose. A solution with existing thuja hedgerows if you can't erase them: thin them out, add plants.
In this thuja live a lot of insects, I found nests of paper wasps, and blackbirds build their nest, fully protected from the neighbour cats.

  3. Whoop, the first row of the 20m front hedge is complete 🎉 Also the second row is at 13m, so another 7m to go, but need to celebrate the first row completion 🎉
So far I have planted 185 Hawthorn, 30 Field Maple, 20 Wild Cherry, 10 Spindle, 20 Crab Apple, 3 Beech, 1 Blackthorn, 1 Dog Rose and 1 English Oak.
Still have a load of trees left to finish off the 7m and fill in the odd initial gaps/damaged trees.

  5. So the front hedge has got to 14.5m front row and 12m inside row. The front row is mainly hawthorn. I just finished the first batch of trees I ordered, this means the if I got what ordered the hedge contains so far ... 120 hawthorn, 30 field maple, 20 wild cherry, 10 spindle, 20 crab apple and 1 beech. Just got back in before the first rain of the predicted storm arrived.

"But farmers are being asked to consider cutting their hedges once every two-to-three years, instead of annually, and letting them grow a bit longer.

"They say allowing the hedges to grow provides more food and shelter for birds and #wildlife, which in turn benefits the #environment."

  9. Suddenly it is "that" season.

I go out looking completely normal - or normal for me. anyway - yet, on the way back, my fingers are become reddened in response to a host of wanton, beckoning berries. Stray pips, or not yet ripened red cells, throb annoyingly from the spaces they have discovered, and slid inside between my teeth. And also, because the best berries are always nearest to the sharpest thorns, my fingers, too, are tingling

  10. What books or articles can you recommend on establishing a hedgerow? I’m thinking a proper one that will stop large herbivores from going through or over. Thanks!

  12. There is a mass of blackthorn in flower in the hedgerow but the blossoms are small and rather unimpressive singly and the twigs are bare.

This wild damson has its leaves and the flowers are much more on the scale of cherry. More refined.

130 years ago there was a fruit farm about 2km away. Possible that this is descended from an escapee.

  14. This book, Hedgerow, is the last Christmas present my mom gave me. I told her I was interested in creating a #hedgerow, so of course she had to find a book on the topic. She was so proud of herself for finding it. She employed my daughter to search for it online, and she ordered it from a used book seller.

Anyway, this is all about hedgerows in England. I'm wondering if any #gardening folks here have ideas for native (Mid-Atlantic/eastern US) plants for a hedgerow?

  18. On her Autumn walk, she noticed something rustling by the #hedgerow. At a closer look, she saw a white hare with blue eyes. It glanced right back at her, while nibbling on a blade of grass. Tiny snowflakes fell from its snout, like crumbs, as a chill crept in.
