Ascending Cat Bells.

Cat Bells is possibly one of the most popular destinations for walkers in the whole of the Lake District. It is therefore a trek where you may meet a lot of other people. We were there at the end of September 2025, well past the end of the school holidays, so crowds were less of an issue, and we found much of the time we were able to keep plenty of space between ourselves and other walkers.
Having our weekly boat ticket made it simple to set off from the launch base at Keswick. Potter Tarn: Providing Water for Paper

If Wainwright had not seen fit to include Potter Fell in his The Outlying Fells of Lakeland, few beyond Kendal would know it existed. Potter Tarn, however, is another matter. Along with Gurnal Dubs, it is one of the fell’s more prominent tarns. Both are favoured for wild swimming, though anyone entering Potter Tarn does so without permis ...

What happens if you add heat to sedimentary rocks? You get fun minerals such as andalusite seen here as the white prismatic, nearly square and diamond crystals in metamorphosed slate. The source of the high temperatures was a granite intrusion that created a contact aureole.

Hardest lead of the day for me. Another epic line, if not quite as striking as the apparently famous Jean Jeanie just to the left. Definitely tougher, despite being the same grade on paper. Such an impressive face of rock and so many interesting lines up it. Weirdly, I almost found this harder than the HVS on the diagonal crack just above, which I managed to second clean despite a couple of awkward gear retrievals.

Back from a trip to the Lake District. On the negative side, I didn't get three days climbing... On the super-positive side, I did get two days of Mountain Training Development Coach training with the ever-excellent John Kettle PLUS a day of climbing at Trowbarrow Quarry. As a bonus, also a nice stay at Lyndhurst Guest House in Kendal and a play at KendalWall on their long autobelays.
