  1. Sharp Edge in the #LakeDistrict is definitely a walk with the “wow” factor. It is probably one of the most exhilarating you can do but you need to take care and check the weather. Great views over Derwent Water to the central Lakes area. See

  2. A warning to users of the A65, perhaps heading to the #YorkshireDales or #LakeDistrict that Yorkshire Water are shutting the road (again!) on the outskirts of Ilkley for 5/6 weeks from Monday 11 May 2026. Huge delays resulted last time.

  8. About a year ago (May '25), I was at the top of Helm Craig, looking down on Grasmere. We were staying at the Lancrigg Hotel for a few nights.

I can't express how much I want to return there. I clearly underestimated how many days we should have stayed there. Can one be homesick for a place you don't live in?

I'm not sure if it's a rational feeling, but I could certainly take a few months to hike as many fells as I could.

  9. Classic Lake District road scene, looking down Thirlmere from the A591 near Castlerigg on a showery day.
<confession> In the original the sky was badly over-exposed, so I used photoshop to replace it with a sky with a similar feel but not so glaringly white. Original in comments. #LakeDIstrict #Photography #AI #Photoshop #Thirlmere #Landscape #LandscapePhotography

  10. This #LakeDistrict walk explores The Dodds, the continuation of the Helvellyn ridge and without any climbing/scrambling or difficult terrain. Fantastic views. Quite a steep descent so worth taking poles if you use them. Easy navigation. See happyhiker.co.uk/MyWalks/LakeD

  11. If you have a spare half hour this film, which I saw at the Christchurch leg of the Banff Mountain Film Festival tour, is worth your time.

Here are some hashtags but don't let them put you off, the film is about them, but it's really a love story.

  12. A painting of the barn from my weekend in the Furness peninsula. A 2 hour painting just before it got too dark to paint. Oil on gesso panel, 20 x 25 cm.

  14. This #LakeDistrict walk on Gowbarrow Fell provides some fabulous views along Ullswater without a massive amount of climbing, by following the contours of the hill. Great views of Blencathra. Visits Aira Force waterfall. See happyhiker.co.uk/MyWalks/LakeD

  15. Haystacks in the #LakeDistrict is a relatively low hill at 1958 ft but makes up for it with its beauty, interesting rock formations and tarns. It was Wainwright’s favourite. This route includes Fleetwith Pike and possibility of bluebells in Spring. See happyhiker.co.uk/MyWalks/LakeD

  16. @ascentale @bikenite A8 Lovely ride yesterday to Wasdale Head. Weather was lovely. Heading up I made great time - only realised when heading back that I had a strong tailwind helping me!

  17. Two walkers. Stranded at 8pm. No torches. Shorts, T-shirts, first time on a hill, inspired by a TikTok video.

Over 3,000 mountain rescue callouts in England and Wales last year. Spring's here and those numbers are only going up.

The fells are brill. They also don't care if you're underprepared.

Read this. Share it with someone who's just getting into hiking.

  18. Out and about teaching some geology in the Lake District again. The alien tourist is checking out a vein of quartz, feldspar and pyrite in a granite (Shap granite). The big pink minerals are K-feldspar. #Geology #Granite #LakeDistrict

  19. It was raining so our Plan B was a scenic drive though the English #LakeDistrict - traffic wasn’t bad but it was the longest I’ve even seen the queue at the old #Gingerbread Shop in #Grasmere, about half an hour standing in the rain (most of that in the graveyard) with a fairly international mix of happy looking tourists.

  21. A Brief Moment of Sun, Raven Crag

Raven Crag catches a rare shaft of sunlight, and frankly it has earned it. This brooding giant overlooks the foot of Thirlmere Reservoir and has been stopping writers in their tracks for generations. They have called it everything from “vertical white walls” and a “chiselled face furred with conifer” to a “gigantic round tower” that ...
