Cat Bells is possibly one of the most popular destinations for walkers in the whole of the Lake District. It is therefore a trek where you may meet a lot of other people. We were there at the end of September 2025, well past the end of the school holidays, so crowds were less of an issue, and we found much of the time we were able to keep plenty of space between ourselves and other walkers.
Having our weekly boat ticket made it simple to set off from the launch base at Keswick. As we hear of the effects of the #ClimateEmergency round the world, and see #flooding in #Norway I am reminded of #StormDesmond that hit #Cumbria between 5th & 6th Dec 2015. In 48 hours #Thirlmere in #LakeDistrict recorded 405mm of rainfall in combination with severe gales up to 81mph. This was an El Nino year.It was the 4th major storm of the autumn. The ground and the lakes were already saturated.

This is a very well known beauty spot near Keswick, alongside Derwent Waters, we just had not got around to getting up there.
There is parking from the National Trust by the bridge and further up by the viewpoint, so is accessible for most visitors. (NT pays for itself in parking when you live in Cumbria 😁 )
