Update. "Supreme Court ruling blocks thousands of lawsuits against the maker of #Roundup weedkiller."
https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-roundup-monsanto-a7f054d80919f98bdfc5190013a8f6f1The court ruled for #Monsanto because the #EPA said Roundup (#glyphosate) was harmless, not because the 𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 said it was harmless. There's good evidence that that the EPA decision was flawed, if not cynical. It relied on studies written mostly by Monsanto staffers and the lead article has been retracted.

A Year of Trump’s #GoldStandardScience
Values behind “gold standard #science” — transparency, rigor, peer review, communication of uncertainty, and freedom from conflicts of interest — are values scientists support. Over past year, Trump repeatedly invoked those values while failing to provide the rigorous scientific explanations they require. Administration is trying to gaslight us about their science-based decisions by slapping a “gold standard science” label on them.

2/ Three highlights:
* In general, with few exceptions, funders could not pay #APCs. § 200.461. (This decides the question still under consideration at the #NIH, and applies the answer to NIH and all other covered agencies.)
* Grants could be terminated "mid-award" for "discretionary reasons" including decisions by political appointees that the grants no longer serve agency priorities. § 200.340.
* Grants "must, where applicable, demonstrably advance the President's policy priorities." They must not encourage racial preferences or illegal immigration, deny that sex is binary, or promote "anti-American values". When multiple grant applications are equally strong, "preference…should be given to institutions with lower indirect cost rates." Grantees must commit to follow existing guidance on #GoldStandardScience. "Senior [political] appointees…must not ministerially ratify or routinely defer to the recommendations of others [like peer reviewers], but must instead use their independent judgment when evaluating Federal award proposals." § 200.205.

For nearly fifteen years, https://climate.gov was #NOAA’s #climate #science crown jewel.
The site embodied precisely the virtues the new EO trumpets as “#GoldStandardScience”: reproducible, transparent, clearly communicating error and uncertainty, and subject to peer review.
Yet on May 31, the contract that funded the portal’s editorial team lapsed, and on June 24, the standalone domain vanished.

Trump’s “#GoldStandard #Science” is already wearing thin
#FDA Commissioner #MartyMakary was on one of weekend news programs, where he was asked about decision to limit pregnant people's access to #COVIDvaccines. Host mentioned that aggregation of studies involving a total of over 1.8M had shown #vaccine was safe and effective.
Makary dismissed all that data because it wasn't "#GoldStandardScience," perfectly illustrating how phrase can be used as a tool to mislead public.

Sadly easy to see that this emphasis on "gold-standard science" by the US administration is just the latest and more plausible-sounding version of "Do your own research" - a blatant attempt to use the inherent scepticism of genuine science as a weapon against science itself. No good can come from anti-science ideologues cherry-picking ideas from research integrity and taking them out of context.
