  1. Whoa. 😳 Ever heard of a system loophole where an infant's death can be exploited for identity acquisition? This video dives into a surprising, and frankly unsettling, detail about US records. Check it out... 🤯 #IdentityTheft #USLaw #Shorts

  2. Update. "Fired Over Speech, Professors Take Their Employers to Court—and Win."
    insidehighered.com/news/facult

"The recent spate of censorship and academic freedom violations is the worst since the McCarthy era, according to one lawyer. But as faculty rack up legal victories, universities may start to think twice before punishing extramural speech."

  4. Interesting case. #USA claims its agents can search an incoming US citizen's phone at the border because technically that citizen is not in US territory until he is cleared to enter the USA. So the USA admits here to applying its laws extraterritorially, since the US citizen is not in the US. That act itself (of seizing and searching the phone outside of its jurisdiction) is illegal, and illegally obtained evidence I thought was inadmissible in US courts. In fact the USA surely is subject to a charge of theft (and possibly other charges) in the bordering country or the country of origin of the flight?

Why I am not a lawyer, I guess.

  7. Update. "Federal agencies that terminated more than a thousand research grants at the University of California last year admitted that they used keywords related to diversity, gender, vaccine hesitancy and COVID-19 to screen for projects that ran afoul of the Trump administration’s priorities. It’s an admission that lawyers for the research professors say is proof that the agencies illegally cancelled nearly $2 billion in grants. And that’s a major development in a lawsuit filed by UC researchers against the Trump administration to permanently get their grants back."

  9. The #Trump admin wants to stop collecting data on employment discrimination, making it much harder to enforce laws against employment discrimination.
    apnews.com/article/eeoc-discri

"How many women hold executive-level positions at top U.S. companies? What is the racial and ethnic breakdown of those roles? What is the gender and racial breakdown of the lowest-paid roles at those companies? The Trump administration is making it harder for the public to know, moving to toss aside a 60-year-old requirement for tens of thousands of private sector employers to submit workforce demographic reports each year to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission."

PS: Individuals could still sue for employment discrimination. But without data to show "patterns and practices", it's very hard to show intent or shift the burden of proof to the employer.

  11. A federal district court just ruled that training #AI tools on copyrighted texts is fair use.
    techcrunch.com/2026/07/20/anth

#Anthropic is in the clear for training #Claude on millions of books without permission or payment. However, it's liable for obtaining many of those books illegally, and its settlement of those claims (about $3k/title) was approved by the court.

So far this decision only applies in the Northern District of California. But it breaks the ice and will (as lawyers say) be "persuasive but not binding" in other districts.

"The plaintiffs claim the center "generates significant noise pollution from diesel generators and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, including chillers, cooling towers, air-handling units, and condenser fans."

    thehill.com/homenews/education

This is just the latest in a series. Universities that disciplined professors for criticizing Charlie Kirk knew or should have known that they were violating those professors' free-speech rights. But they did it to align themselves with the Trump admin, even on the wrong side of the law. Consider these settlements and damage awards to be a cowardice tax.

It follows that politicizing the #FTC feeds the growing European movement for #DataSovereignty -- the movement for #EU users, citizens, voters, companies, and governments to favor tech platforms based in the EU.
