  1. Here’s the latest state of a WIP prototype branch. We’re still going to do a design pass to improve things; maybe removing the card styling of results (since each section isn’t activatable, but results within are).

There’s more to do, and again: this light style is an off-by-default accessibility setting that I’ve been testing with to ensure it will work, but we don’t plan to ship a light shell by default in 51 afaik.

But you can at least see some progress. :)

  2. We miiiiight be able to sneak in a pretty substantial change to GNOME Shell in time for the next release: moving the search results to an overlay instead of taking over the screen.

It’s more spatial (the search results come from somewhere instead of just… taking over) but for light style users like me: it should actually be more accessible, too!

One more step on the path to a proper light style Shell.

NOTE: lots of style issues remain in this prototype!

  3. Live now: @jimmac showing new icon capabilities in GNOME! Our icons are gaining support for variable weight plus transitions and animations. 🤩

  4. One of the ideas we kind of explored with elementary OS but never really iterated on was “widgets” as mini apps that use existing window manager hints to get special treatment from the window manager.

I feel like there is a *lot* we could do similarly and better on GNOME around always-on-top, on-all-workspace, always-on-bottom, etc.

Android’s picture-in-picture, for example, is “just” a tiny view of an app with some toolkit helpers, then the system UI does the rest.

  5. Anyone familiar with hacking on GNOME Shell or writing Shell extensions interested in helping with a design experiment? 👀

The GNOME design team is interested in exploring some improvements to window/app switching, but we want to make sure we actually *use* the concepts before making too many assumptions. I may write up a longer blog post or something going into more of the thinking behind the design we’re exploring—but in the meantime: anyone interested in helping out? 😊

  6. As a result, I'm revising this post a bit to try to be more nuanced and balanced.

And I hope we (as in, the GNOME community, myself absolutely included) can take a step back and try to be a bit more objective and productive. That includes being a little less quick to die on certain hills, less likely to make assumptions and generalizations about groups of contributors, and more willing to listen and think about what our community members are saying.

  7. @cassidy I agree with you about that logo, I have always found it off-putting. I would also point out that in some cultures and even for some Western people (such as germophobes) feet are considered "dirty", so for those people it's kind of like using a toilet or a garbage dumpster as a logo, not in any way appealing.

  8. Friday night?

Perfect time to drop a blog post that might sound like clickbait, but that I genuinely hope can help forge a path forward while making everyone happy—or at least pissing everyone off equally (sometimes the best you can ask for!)

Edit: lol it’s Thursday night. I should go to bed.

Edit ×2: comments enabled; reply publicly here and it’ll show on the post as well. ✨

Edit ×3: I’ve revised the post based on feedback

  9. As such, the GNOME UI font test repo has been updated based on Inter 4.1. If you’ve been trying Inter/the new font out on GNOME, make sure you update!

    gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-u

(If you didn’t know, we’re testing a modified version of Inter with one change so far: cv05 or “lower-case L with tail” enabled by default to give it a bit more legibility and familiarity for those coming from Cantarell, the current GNOME default font.)

  10. Third-party GNOME/Adwaita app developers: if there was a simple way to opt into some more expressive kind of user-chosen theming (think: more like Material You with Adwaita and less like whole GTK stylesheets), would you be interested in opting your app into it?

    Why or why not?

Feel free to boost widely! Not a poll because raw numbers are not as interesting as the discussion to me. 😊

I've become more active in the GNOME community and want to help improve the user experience in GNOME.

    Proposal:
Marble Shell should be the default GNOME theme. It offers a modern look with dark and light modes and complements the new font in GNOME 47. This update would enhance the user experience. More details: github.com/imarkoff/Marble-she.

Join me in this effort to improve GNOME!

  12. Oh, and I love these colorful wallpapers (amazing work from @jimmac yet again!). They pair so nicely! I didn’t have to download anything to change up the look—each screenshot was just two or three clicks.

  13. My favorite new thing by far is accent colors. It’s so nice and refreshing to be able to really change the feel of your computer with just a few well-defined options—all while not introducing a massive burden to third-party app developers.

I’m most excited to see more apps incorporate the accent color in interesting ways, as it’s a great way to pull the user’s preferences into the app.

  14. I’m really loving what’s coming in GNOME 47! It’s shaping up to be such a good polish release, and it keeps getting better. Huge props to all the folks who’ve been plugging away at the design and entire stack this cycle.

I'm looking forward to meeting up with folks next week in Denver for them to share more about their work this cycle and to hack on any last touches—plus planning what’s next. Join us in-person or remotely! guadec.org

  15. Wrapping up a very productive GNOME design call… about accent colors! We addressed every single blocking topic and have a clear way forward. I don’t want to promise anything specific (especially timelines), buuuut it’s looking good to me.

I might write up a blog post to summarize the direction once we sort some of the little details out. But there’s a pretty good consensus across half a dozen or so people doing the work—harder than it sounds. 😅

  16. What are some other ways a local music app could be more useful in a world where so many lean on streaming services? What would make you consider using a local player more, if anything?

I’d *love* to integrate with a music store directly where you could purchase music, but I just don’t see it happening. Maybe we *could* link out to known-good sources where people can buy music to get started, though?

  17. I really want accent colors to ship in GNOME, and we’re approaching the beginning of the GNOME 47 cycle, so… what’s blocking it? The short answer: design consensus.

The longer answer: there are outstanding—but imho not insurmountable—concerns and a lot of design work to do around it. 🧵

  18. Spent a little time revving it to address feedback re: calls to action and too many buttons. Idk what I'm doing at this point, but anyone is welcome to steal or throw this away. :D

  19. If you use GNOME Web, do you use pinned tabs? If so (lots of caveats…), does the pinned tab closing behavior make sense to you?

  20. iPhone Pro has a Dynamic Island, but if GNOME 45 goes according to plan, it’ll have a Dynamic Archipelago!

This doesn't match the great work Georges just implemented in an MR, but it gives you an idea. :)

  21. In just over 15 minutes, Georges will be live streaming his work on GNOME! Today’s agenda: working on the workspace dots “Activities” replacement.

  22. I've been talking a bit with folks working on GNOME about the state of the System Monitor app and its handful of community-made alternatives, then I had a thought:

Is it a wild idea to just... not have the app?

Wait wait, put away your pitchforks! We could do something better!

What if the reasons people actually use System Monitor were just exposed more contextually in the OS, for everyone? 🤔

    For example...
