Here in West Yorkshire we’ve had hot dry weather for what seems like forever, but it is finally raining. I’ve just been standing in my kitchen doorway watching the rain fall in the glow of a streetlight. It smells beautiful. That smell (petrichor) is caused by geosmin, a chemical produced by bacteria. We are so sensitive to it that we can smell it in concentrations as low as 4 parts per billion. #rain #petrichor #geosmin

Geosmin je organická sloučenina typicky zemité vůně a chuti, produkovaná některými druhy aktinobakterií a zodpovědná za zemitou chuť červené řepy.
