Filoli is a country estate located in Woodside California. To make a long story short the Filoli estate was donated to the National Trust for Historic Preservation back in 1975 by the Roth family with an endowment for the maintenance of the estate.

Today we visited Filoli estate gardens with the Explorers Guild, a group that creates expeditions with a storytelling element to it. They do regular events in the Bay Area and we’re looking forward to their upcoming Steeplechase event (riding multiple merry-go-rounds in a single day.)

They’re pretty fun, and exceptional for the scale (and amount of scrap wood used to make them!) It’s a nice contrast on the trails from the gorgeous house and lush gardens of the Bourne mansion.

“Tulip After Rain” — Rain drops on a spring tulip blossom.
Patty and I had a plan to visit a Bay Area garden where she often photographs spring flowers. According to the calendar, it was time for the tulips and other flowers to be at peak bloom. But as the day approached, it was clear that there was a chance of rain which, to say the least, can make this sort of photography challenging. We headed there early in the morning anyway, and it rained on us during the drive. The clouds were still thick when we arrived. I am not the flower photographer in our household — that would be Patty’s forte. But seeing so many flower photographs (hers in the house and online), I can’t resist trying my hand at this occasionally. In late May we headed to a large Bay Area garden to spend the morning with this subject, and I came back with a few photographs.
