  1. Snake Oil

The wise heretic should be able to spot the fakery of the snake oil salesman. I bring this up now as understanding snake oil is key to becoming an advanced and remarkable heretic.

Snake oil is a term used to describe deceptive marketing, health care fraud, or a scam. Similarly, snake oil salesman is a common label used to describe someone who sells, promotes, or is a general proponent of some valueless or fraudulent cure, remedy, or solution. The term comes from the “snake oil” that used to be sold as a cure-all elixir for many kinds of physiological problems. Many 18th-century European and 19th-century United States entrepreneurs advertised and sold mineral oil (often mixed with various active and inactive household herbs, spices, drugs, and compounds, but containing no snake-derived substances whatsoever) as “snake oil liniment”, making claims about its efficacy as a panacea. Patent medicines that claimed to be panaceas were extremely common from the 18th century until the 20th century, particularly among vendors masking addictive drugs such as cocaine, amphetamine, alcohol, and opium-based concoctions or elixirs, to be sold at medicine shows as medication or products promoting health.

  2. Language and Engine

At this development stage, I plan to write this game using Python and the Ren’Py story engine. This is because The Endless Rooms is narrative-heavy heavy and I have a little experience with Python. Not a lot of experience – the only complete project was a driver for a 7-seg display written in MicroPython.

I’m taking a few departures from your average Ren’Py visual novel.

    1. Art style – as I hope you can see, my art style is fairly unique among visual novels and related media.
    2. The narrative is non-linear – the story is not so much divided into paths as such and can be explored in a number of different ways to get a range of endings.
    3. The focus is on exploration – you are encouraged to explore the rooms in whichever way you wish.
    4. Hidden secrets – there will be a fair amount of hidden options, items, and choices.
    5. Attention is key – ideas, clues, and easter eggs will depend on your attention to some details.
    6. I like to subvert expectations – expect your assumptions to be open to question.
    7. Fun fibs – I like games that fib (tell lies) in a way that is fun when you discover the truth

As I begin to get into the guts of the coding, I will release code snippets and screenshots.
