Every day, staff across TDSB support student achievement and well-being, and work hard to create inclusive spaces where every student feels valued, seen and empowered.
As you may be aware, there are demonstrations scheduled to take place in our city this week which, in some past cases, have fostered inflammatory, transphobic, and hateful behaviours against members of 2SLGBTQ+ communities.
Ahead of these planned demonstrations, we want to make it unequivocally clear that TDSB stands with our trans, Two-Spirit and non-binary students, staff and families, and we support everyone's human rights and expression of gender.
Harassment, discrimination and hate have no place in TDSB. In our schools, we do not tell students who they should be, but welcome them as they are. We do this by focusing on their academic learning and fostering feelings of belonging as expected in the Ontario curriculum and the Ontario Human Rights Code.
“The Ontario Human Rights Code (Code) protects everyone from discrimination and harassment based on numerous grounds, including disability, gender identity and expression, race, and religion. In schools, following the Code means that every student has the right to a learning environment free from discrimination, harassment, or other expressions of hatred — an environment where everyone feels safe to learn, thrive, and be themselves”. - (OHRC, Statement on Anti-Hate, June 2023).
We know that news of the planned demonstrations is upsetting, and students, staff and families may require additional support. TDSB’s social work department is ready to support where needed. Students and/or families should reach out to their school Principal or another staff member at their school to speak with someone about the planned demonstrations, and/or the impact of transphobia and homophobia more broadly. Staff should speak with their principal/manager or reach out directly to the Board’s Employee and Family Assistance Program.
You can read more about the work we’re doing and the actions we’re taking to interrupt and confront discrimination and hate in our schools and workplaces in TDSB’s Student Learning Strategy for Combatting Hate and Racism and Update on TDSB’s Anti-Hate and Anti-Racism Strategy

➡️ MASK UP. All attendees will be asked to mask, to protect our immunocompromised kin and to reduce the risk of doxxing. Masks will be provided if you don’t have one. Flags and banners, if you have them, can also be raised to cover your face, but they aren’t a replacement for a mask on their own.
➡️ DON’T TALK TO COPS. Police lie all the time. They may act friendly or sympathetic, but their goal is always to get information that can hurt our friends. If an officer insists on talking to you, direct them to a police liaison.
➡️ DON’T TALK TO FASCISTS. Conserve your energy and your empathy to use for supporting our friends. Anti-trans protesters may try to draw you into involved debates; they won’t be convinced by anything you say. They enjoy riling us up and turning those conversations into content to mock online.
👩🏻🤝👨🏿👩🏽🤝👨🏼 BRING A FRIEND & DON’T LEAVE ALONE: Going around solo increases the likelihood of ending up in a dangerous situation, even after the action has ended. If you don’t have anyone, you can ask the organizers to link you up with a group to head out together.
📸 DON’T FILM ALLIES. If you must film, keep your phone trained on the cops and transphobes at all times. Too often, photos and videos posted online lead to far-right harassment, which regularly gets people fired, stalked, and criminally charged. Never, ever hand over footage to the police.
🏳️⚧️ REMEMBER WHY YOU’RE THERE. Your job's not to dictate how community members respond to threats; it's to take up space so fascists can't fill it. If you’re worried about someone, check in and offer a hand, make sure they're hydrated and not hungry, but stay focused on on how you can best contribute to the defense.

While planned by the fundamentalists of 😫Save Canada, and transphobic influencer 😫"Billboard" Chris, they are but part of a broader anti-trans push by major media outlets, as well as politicians like Pierre Poilievre, Doug Ford, Stephen Lecce, and 😫Maxime Bernier.
This past June, Save Canada and Billboard Chris brought hundreds of transphobic supporters from across Canada to march on schools in an Ottawa suburb. In response, community members rallied twice that number and blocked the bigots in.
➡️ With your help, we can do the same.
As multiply marginalized people, we know that community—not cops—is what keeps us safe.
➡️ From the everyday violence of the police against Black and Indigenous communities, to the brutal encampment clearings at Lamport and Trinity Bellwoods, to the monthly pre-pandemic anti-Islam rallies in Nathan Phillips Square, we see time and again how the police stand on the wrong side of history. We cannot rely on police to protect us from the growing far-right, which wants to legislate us out of existence in the seats of government and terrorize us in the streets.
That’s why we’re calling for all our kin, our friends, and our allies to show up at Wallingford and Cassandra on the morning of the 22nd.
We encourage community members to bring Pride flags, banners, and any supplies they can easily carry. Keep in mind, though, that the location is far from downtown, there is a possibility of a mobile defence, and you may have to leave anything too heavy behind in a hurry.
While we’re doing everything we can to minimize risks to all participants, the reality is that many of our opponents will show up looking to harm trans people and our friends. That means they may be physically aggressive, but also that they may film and try to identify (“dox”) our side to target for harassment online.
