For those mornings when I miss the UVI window for radiation-free dog walkin’ I have this whole route mapped out where we just hot-foot it from shade tree to shade tree to minimize sun exposure. It involves squeezing through fence rails and short sprints across sunbaked clearings over crunchy brown grass. It’s ridiculous. But here we are.
A newer anxiety is that if this hellfire weather keeps up much longer there aren’t gonna be any shade trees left.
101F this morning at 11:30AM. Fire watches across the entirety of Central Texas. Hasn’t rained in 2 months. My rainwater cistern is runnin’ on empty. It’s fuckin’ apocalyptic.

Man, if there’s one phrase I never need to hear again, it’s “how do we beat the heat?” I mean, jesus in a jetpack. We can’t beat no heat. Not unless all the climate actions and social policy interventions we’ve known about for decades but never bothered with are actually implemented, which, lol. I was listening to NPR the other day and they were interviewing an unhoused woman who said the heat makes her physically ill all the time and she sleeps on wet cardboard. WET CARDBOARD. “Stay hydrated!” doesn’t cut it when it’s 110 and you’re livin’ on the street in an urban heat sink.

The dogs, evidently in response to their strong feelings about breakfast, have just woken me up, kicking and screaming, from a delightful dream where it was a brisk autumn morning and I had to put on a jacket.
When I stumbled to the door to let them out a big wad of sauna hit me in the face.
It’s come to this. In addition to regular N95 anxiety nightmares, I now have fantasy dreams about Before-Times Weather.
