The price of gasoline & plastics will continue to go up, as reserves are drawn down & processing costs continue to climb.
Inevitably, ordinary people will be priced out of being able to buy gas for their cars. There's no avoiding it.

A friend of mine did an interesting bit of research and data gathering that I’ve not seen elsewhere and I thought I’d share here.
If you read about energy and markets, you might have read about EROEI: Energy return on energy invested. E.g: It might take 20 gallons of oil to extract a 55g barrel of oil.
So what’s the energy cost to refine a gallon of gasoline?
To get an answer, my friend found the government page showing the energy used by “Petroleum Administrative for Defense District 5. Basically, west-coast refineries.”. It’s here. A snapshot graph:
Next, you need to know how much they refined (oil in, gasoline etc out). That’s here. And the refining capacity is here.
If you do the math (to tip my hat to a scientist I admire), the result is 8.6kWh/gallon. To get that number, you
- take the annual electricity purchased by the refinery (X)
- Calculate the proportion of gasoline vs total refined output (Y) (19.45 gallons gas per 44.77 gallons refined output)
- Divide X/Y
That’s more than I would have guessed. Our 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV holds about 60kWh and can drive around 180 miles, by way of comparison. So the refining energy could power an average EV sedan 34 miles. Which is higher than the average EPA mileage of a comparable ICE sedan.
Food for thought. As my friend put it, “charging an EV will always require less energy than an equivalent gasoline powered vehicle, and would always be cheaper for the end user if not for subsidies to the petroleum industry.”

L'#EROEI è eg quanta energia ti resta da un combustibile dopo l'energia spesa per estrarlo. Esempio classico, il petrolio dalle sabbie canadesi è peggio di quello arabo.
L'uranio va "distillato" con processi chimici e fisici energivori per essere usato, quindi il combustibile per le centrali nucleari richiede sempre piú energia per essere prodotto. Quando finiranno le scorte facili (fra pochi decenni), le emissioni schizzeranno.

Gathering-hunting has a better #EROEI than all forms of agriculture, because they all massively reduce the complexity and overall productivity of the ecosystems destroyed to make space for them. They *seem* to have a higher EROEI in the short term, only because they mine the natural capital accumulated by those ecosystems before they were destroyed, or use non-renewable inputs (eg fossil fuels) to boost production.

@chebra I'm sceptical. When you factor in the full energy cost of manufacturing and installing solar panels, I'm not sure they even achieve overunity. Plants manufacture and install themselves and if we're talking about generating biogas locally, for local needs, using waste from plants being grown anyway for other purposes, I suspect the #EROEI would be much greater than PV or any other high tech solution.

@RandomDamage I'm not sure you're fully considering #EROEI (Energy Returned on Energy Invested). When you say

To get a fair apples-with-apples comparison with wind, you have to subtract all the energy used to mine, transport, and refine, the fuel used to generate that 1.5 GW. Plus all the energy used to dispose of the waste created in generating it. None of which happens with wind.
