This makes me happy...the culture war discourse around The Odyssey was so obnoxious that I wanted it to be a big hit just to spite the haters.
(With luck, I'll get out to see it sometime next week.)

While I frequently enjoy this channel's commentary, this is a culture war take that I just can't support.
Yes, the casting of Helen of Troy is eyebrow-raising, but this ISN'T an election, and you should not be buying tickets or boycotting to make a political point to Hollywood. This is a MOVIE - it's entertainment, and should be treated as such.
If you want to watch The Odyssey in the theatre, go watch it!
Ugh.
Cancel culture wasn't right when Gamergate did it back in 2014. It wasn't right when the left used it to implement a literal reign of terror on social media in the last few years, and it's not right today!
You can't create a more just and fair society by being unjust or vindictive. So if you're thinking about trying to get somebody you've never even met or interacted with fired because they said something you didn't like, DON'T.
Anybody with doubts about the need to end wokeness should watch this video:

Not a single person called the police.
This is what the prelude to genocide looks like - future leaders ready to sign their own Nuremberg Laws and open up death camps - and it is here right now.

Gotta vent here...
Elon Musk definitely comes across as a dick at times. However, he's a dick who:
- Was a founder of Paypal, a pioneer of e-commerce;
- Is a pioneer in electric cars;
- Is a pioneer in space technology; and
- Brought communications systems to a disaster area on his own dime to help people in need.
So, before you bash him, I have one question for you: what have YOU contributed to the world?
For all the talk about race-swapping of Astrid in the new How to Train Your Dragon, when you actually see Nico Parker in costume with the rest of the cast, the only thing that stands out about her is her hair, which has a slightly different texture...and is braided up anyway: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFJPxZALE3w
This obsession with race has to end. Astrid having dark hair instead of blonde hair is not a problem.
This just properly crossed my radar...and it seems that people are complaining that Lara Croft looks too "manly".
Honestly, as somebody who's old enough to remember the debut of the game, I think this complaint is ridiculous. She looks like a female American Ninja Warrior contestant, which is completely right for somebody who's doing what she does.
So, I might just check this one out.

A thought about Velma season two...
Let's NOT dogpile it with Youtube reviews.
If it's really that bad (I have no intentions of watching it) then just ignore it and don't waste your time with it. That's what we used to do with terrible shows, when the world was a better place. Maybe if we act the same way we did back when the world was a better place, it will start getting better.
Just a thought.
What do space shuttle disasters and the recent Hugo Awards controversy have in common? A lot more than you'd think...

A thought for the new year:
The best thing you can do about the culture war is disengage. Don't let it live rent-free in your head. Get away from it, regain your perspective, and only return if you want to.
Don't worry about whether something is too woke or has enough representation - just watch it based on whether you're interested. Make your own mind up about whether you liked it.
Funnily enough, life gets a lot better when you do that.
I agree with every work Ayer says here.
As vicious as the attacks on fans by the left side of the culture war can be, the schadenfreude and dogpiling on films by the right side is equally vicious. Meanness of spirit does not make for a better world.

We've done a corrective to the right-leaning side of the culture war, so now it's time for a corrective to the left.
The left likes to position itself as a champion of diversity, but it's legacy is instead one of erasure. In reality, there was quite a lot of diversity in media before the culture war started, some of it taking unexpected forms. So, let's take a closer look:

Culture warriors are starting to declare that the 60th anniversary Doctor Who specials are a ratings failure, and that fans are jumping ship...but when you actually look at the figures, that's just not true.
So, let's take a look at how the ratings for Doctor Who actually work, and figure out if the 60th anniversary episodes were a success for ourselves:

Well, I was supposed to be doing typesetting, but then this poured out of me. So, let's take a look at why the culture war must end, once and for all...

A quick lesson on how the culture war works...
1. The Radio Times publishes an interview with Russell T. Davies, in which he says the new episodes may offend people who only see Doctor Who as hard science fiction: https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sci-fi/doctor-who-boss-fantasy-step-newsupdate/
2. The Telegraph quotes the interview saying that the new episodes will "upset diehard fans": https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/12/06/new-doctor-who-will-upset-diehard-fans-russell-t-davies/
3. People react to the Telegraph article.
Stupid, right?
I just had a birthday, and I think I have a birthday wish...
I would like to see #endtheculturewar trend, well, EVERYWHERE.
And here's why: like probably a lot of other people, I'm sick to death of it - both sides. But the only way we will ever reclaim that ground and turn it into something positive is to start fighting for it ourselves.
So let's start the anti-culture war movement right now, and get rid of the battlefield!
