CW: #Politics : Vote2022 Day 5 - Dems Have the Senate, & Could (Seriously) Keep the House
Good morning!
It's another day of the U.S. mid-term election saga. There has been joy, tears, drama, and intrigue. What a season!
In the Senate:
Biggest news is the Senate was called in favor of the Democrats at about 9:15 p.m. EST yesterday evening (11/12/22).
News started coming in around 6 p.m. EST that votes for Arizona and Nevada would start dropping around 7 p.m. The first numbers that dropped were in AZ. While all eyes were contemplating those realities, word came that Clark County, which encompasses Las Vegas, dropped their votes. We waited for word. Silence. NBC got the scoop. News never went to Twitter first, it went straight to headlines with NBC breaking the news Cortez-Masto won, pulling ahead of Laxalt with around 5,000 votes¹, and the Senate belongs to the Democrats.
Democrats owe much of its Nevada win to the Culinary Workers Union of Las Vegas. The union has long been a solid organizing arm for the workers who keep Vegas running (and keep what happens there on your vacation nobody's business). The Union's ballot cure outreach coordinated 200 canvassers in the streets, a full-time phone bank, and organizers inside casinos to reach workers on their breaks. Of the approximately 14,000 Clark County ballots requiring curing (the process of the voter modifying their ballot in some necessary way so it can be counted), the Union reached 5,100 voters to cure their ballots. That's incredible!
Democrats have quickly pivoted attention to the Georgia runoff. One politico made the mistake of tweeting that GA was now not needed. That brought a wave of condemnation. As anticipated, the Dem party and politicos can say what they like, but Dem voters want insulation against Manchin's and Sinema's stonewalling and blocking of major legislation.
In the House:
My goodness, Folks. There is actually the possibility the Democrats may keep the House!
At around the time the votes in Arizona were dropping, news outlets were updating their projections. With 218 seats the number needed for a House majority, and a plus or minus four-seat margin of error, projections now have Democrats with 216 seats and Republicans with 219 seats. That's a one-seat majority for the Republicans, folks.
Why the change? A major upset. In Washington state's Third Congressional District, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez pulled out a win against a highly favored MAGA Republican. Perez wasn't projected to win by anyone, not even the Democratic party. Her win to a U.S. House seat made politicos stop and reassess.
So can Dems also pull an upset and retain the House? It is depends on the toss up races. Of the 11 races not called, 10 are considered battlegrounds with 5 considered toss ups. The stage is set for a holiday miracle.
In Arizona:
At around 7 p.m. last night, Pima and Maricopa counties dropped votes. It looks like Hobbs has pulled away from MAGA candidate Lake, Lake now needing 53-56% (depending on who is reporting) of the remaining votes to win.
The race has not been called and probably will not be for awhile as AZ Elections Officials remain firm, steady, and precise in order to combat election denying Lake.
Meanwhile, Lake's MAGA crazies decided it would be fun to march around the Maricopa County Elections office in Phoenix. There weren't many MAGA nuts, only a couple of dozen. The diminished anger is notable.

#electionday I’m always surprised how recent developments become “issues” that voters lean on as reasons to vote for or against something or a person. The economy, as painful as it truly is for many, is a response to fluctuations that politicians are unlikely to influence in a meaningful way. The more important thing, to my mind, is the long-term effects of a proposal, party or person, and a majority of us pulling in the same direction. #electionday2022

Yesterday's Gospel in the #Episcopal Lectionary was Luke 14:12-24. A few of my study Bible notes suggested this parable was about Jews and Gentiles - e.g., the Jews were the ones initially invited, and Jesus says "not one of those individuals who were invited will taste my banquet" (NET).
