  1. I watched Drive My Car a few nights ago on HBO/Max and most enjoyed how it seamlessly uses so many languages throughout: Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Korean Sign Language, English, and silence.

Using Uncle Vanya to echo the storyline, it's an interesting juxtaposition of theater and film, and how they can relate to life.

Forgiving oneself is critical, because we're all deeply flawed.

  2. #NW #cinéma Drive my car
#DriveMyCar

  3. Watched Drive my Car again recently, and did a drawing of Hidetoshi Nishijima.

  4. I watched #WheelOfFortuneAndFantasy last night. And between that, #DriveMyCar and other films, #ryusukehamaguchi is fast becoming one of my favorite #film directors. He has the keen insight for the human condition and how we can find a measure of grace and epiphany- not in a bombastic Hollywood way but something much closer to our daily truth. Not being hyperbolic but he’s in the same class as Chekhov, Joyce, Baldwin, and Woolf. #cinema #auteur

  5. Film streaming service, Mubi, is currently £1 for 3 months for UK subscribers.

For that you can watch Charlotte Wells' #Aftersun, Harry Wootliff's #OnlyYou, Park Chan-Wook's #DecisionToLeave, Destin Daniel Cretton's #ShortTerm12, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi's #DriveMyCar and Céline Sciamma's #PetiteMaman to name but 6 great, great films.

  6. Drive My Car
Drama by Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, Japan, 2021

Not for the impatient: The three hours should be taken, even if they didn't seem that long to me due to the exceptionally good pacing. The opening credits alone start after 45 minutes.
The story unfolds in all its breadth and revelation over the course of the film.
