#docker #container #Migration

It's absolutely mindblowing what's possible today when you decide to self host your services, instead of trusting the big companies to do it.
When I got into #Django development some years ago, I soon discovered how nice and easy it was to host my projects on #Heroku. The CLI was nice and simple, there was no need to hand-roll complex config files, and I could even hook up GitHub so a push to main would automatically trigger a new Heroku deployment. It was so smooth and seamless, Heroku even had a free tier for small projects at the time so this was perfect.
Well, today Heroku is essentially on life support, the platform still exists and does what it always has done, but it's no longer being actively developed. So, for me this meant I'd have to find a good alternative eventually, and it looks like I've just discovered the right fit, #Dockhand.
This is a really nice web UI for managing Docker Compose stacks, and the really awesome thing about it is it totally supports Git deployments and authenticated web hooks so GitHub or other platforms can ping Dockhand when a new push has occurred. What's really neat also is Dockhand’s extensive support for push notifications, so I can set up notifications for when a deployment succeeds or fails, when any of my other containers have updates available, when a container is experiencing an issue, etc. Overall this seems really stable as far as I can tell, and new deployments happen much, much faster compared to Heroku. I’ll have to run some more tests to be completely sure, but so far this looks really, really solid and I’m extremely happy with this new setup.

1. #HomeAssistant (Smart Home)
2. #PiHole (Werbeblocker)
3. #Dockhand (Docker Containerverwaltung)
4. #Mosquitto (MQTT-Server)
5. #Snowflake (TOR Proxy)
6. Watchtower (Autoupdater für Snowflake)Was nun noch ansteht:
3. #Nginx aufsetzen als Reverse Proxy
4. #ESPhome Devices für HomeAssistant aufsetzen -
Oh my gawd. Upgrading #Immich from 2 to 3 in #docker via #Dockhand is an absolute fucking nightmare.
The main problem is that Dockhand stores compose files within the Dockhand container itself. But you can also have it manage stacks you made elsewhere, like with #Portainer. Unless you delete portainer, which also deleted the compose files.
Then your stacks are in this limbo state where everything works, but you can't edit anything. I tried to create a new local compose file and load it into Dockhand, and that worked. Until I needed to edit it, and then it disappeared again. Because it's not saved within the dockhand container.
So I can only create a new stack. And reconfigure everything and rescan all my photo directories.

I migrated my hosted applications from Portainer to #Dockhand a few weeks ago, but left Portainer installed (but disabled)... ya know, just in case.
Now that I've been using Dockhand for a bit, I don't think I'd go back to Portainer anyway.

Just finished migrating from #Portainer to #Dockhand on my NAS. I'd previously moved one stack to see how things went and then let it go for a couple of weeks. All seemed well, so this morning I moved the rest. Went way, way smoother than I'd anticipated. Not sure why, but I had it in my head it'd be a nightmare.

@peanutsguy @mosu @dlemper Thanks for all your recommendations. I tried #dockhand first, and its “all compose files should be on the main machine” approach didn’t fit my existing infrastructure. Existing stacks adoption will be too much of an issue.
Also #komodo feels much more stable and feature complete compared to #dockhand and especially to #arcane. Not the simplest tool but pretty intuitive after some time of tinkering.

Configured #Gotify in a #Docker container last week and so far have it set up to receive notifications from my #Proxmox nodes, #Dockhand, and Ping (an uptime app which watches my services from the macOS desktop).
A few of my #KeyboardMaestro macros publish alerts to the desktop, and I'll be re-routing those to Gotify as well. This will allow me to receive the alerts across all my devices. #SelfHosting

My service stacks are (mostly) up and running!
Not gonna' say blood, sweat, and tears, but definitely a lot of late nights getting to this point. I still have to do the "media" stack with Immich and Jellyfin, and I've saved them for last because they store their media on an external USB DAS.
Logs are all clean for the most part. Gemini was invaluable in troubleshooting errors, NGL.

ICYMI: I recently replaced MULTIPLE apps in my homelab with one: Dockhand. Check it out and let me know your thoughts! #homelab #selfhosting #dockhand

Finally made the switch on basically all of my LXC deployments to use Dockhand instead of Portainer. Having 1 simple place to manage things will be nice! #homelab #selfhosting #dockhand

After my upgrade to #komodo 2.0 failed miserably (or rather, the update to the Periphery agents, which all lost connectivity to the server and I couldn't get it back), and me not wanting to spend extra time debugging it, I moved my #docker management to #dockhand.
I don't miss any functionality for my use case, so that's a plus. Also appreciated: the automatic updates, which I used in Komodo, too.
Meanwhile, Linux Update Dashboard has been helping me keep my #homelab servers updated.
Currently running a fully updated homelab, feels nice.

Paperless sofort einstampfen?
Wie gefährlich sind solche Vulnerabilities?
Ich habe wirklich keine Ahnung... -
@oliver It was a lot of hard work and I had to ask #Mistral a lot of questions - but I did it and it works now.
#Dockhand is really awesome and extremely fast. This was definitely the right decision. Goodbye #Portainer . -
I'm loving this channel
Tried dockhand and it's really great! I can finally see everything in one place and very convenient!
He didn't mention how to adopt remote stacks - I mounted that via NFS to the host and then bind mount that to dockhand so it can see everything!
