Last time had a great view form Shoden-ji - with Hieisan in the distance - what a garden and borrowed landscape use there! -

Ferry to Shimabara on a foggy drizzly afternoon - destination up ahead!
Not the best weather for it that day but the ferry ride and side trip between Kumamoto and Nagasaki was such a super memorable part of my trip in 2023 -

Following that bus ride☝🏽 to MinamiShimabara, I did have a bit of time after my appointment at the Sake brewery and the next bus back to Shimabara. Not a lot so I rushed a fair bit to get to the pier and water and take some pics in between.

2/2 There's a lot I can tell you about that morning and day, and food and then night view (and adventure getting to it), but right that morning at the Suwa Jinja, everything was worth it.
The great egret (white heron) that was there for a bit returned while I was at the temple cafe next to the pond and then strutted, waded a bit. I waited 45 mins or so in the drizzle under a tiny tree (didn't help) waiting to see if it would spread it's wings - and it did, to hop up to the bank.

On our #Japan trip last year, I got just 1 day to myself in #Nagasaki (besides the evening I landed, rest was work). Woke up after somewhat late and tiring (work)day and it was a wet drizzly morning. Still I ventured out (I was prepared, rainjacket and cover for my backpack) and visited a few places [I walked and walked and walked]
Miserable weather but turned out to be a most memorable day. (see next - you'll be rewarded too)

And this mix of ingredients is the same I made in our apartment in Kobe around this time. Mezcal I had taken with me - campari and vermouth procured there. Hey 3x and a fancier drink at the end of it. (Yes I took the toasted oak with me)

Ok so of course we didn't finish all that. Had about ⅘ a tray left when put together to take back
(On the bus + train/subway) - #Amagasaki back to KobeAnd yes, we had and the kids especially enjoyed #Sushi for #breakfast

I know I know it's #Japan #Costco #sushi and there's plenty of that online.
Here's more 😄A long time ago I had made a pact with the kids - they would never ask me for grocery store sushi (unless in Japan) and I would grant them their wish.
Anyways for ~US$40 (2023 rates) you get a whole big tray of sushi - with ikura!!
So yes kid1 got her own tray.
We let Kid2 have a run of the other tray before partner and I had some.
Excellent birthday sushi meal - check out that smile!

Daikon oroshi / grated daikon
I would use a box grater small holes before but picked this implement up in Japan last yr - nothing fancy, it was just among the first things from the closest discount store (daiso). Nice to use it again - it does work quite a bit better than box grater or zester type grater (microplane doesn't work well for this).
Squeeze out juice from the daikon and use
