Happy #DecemberSolstice! The shortest day in the northern hemisphere, #WinterSolstice begins astronomical winter. The longest day in the southern hemisphere, #SummerSolstice begins astronomical summer. The meteorological seasons changed December 1 - latitude generally determines whether astronomical or meteorological seasons fit a region better. #Solstice #astronomy #weather

Today was the #WinterSolstice in the #NothernHemisphere and so tonight will be the longest night of the year. The #Sun actually reached its southern-most pass in the #sky a little under six hours ago. So, #Winter has started.
Of course, if you’re in the #SouthernHemispere, replace “winter” with “summer”, “northern” with “southern”, and “night” with “day”.

I'm a few (about 54) minutes late, but…
Merry Solstice, everybody!
Especially to people in the northern hemisphere who may be struggling with longer (or even constant) periods of darkness and very cold weather. Remember that it will get brighter and warmer again soon. Until then, may you find ways to enjoy the #solstice, like I do.

Understanding seasons - a look at the hourly incoming solar radiation during the two solstices (23.5°N/S). I've added a red marker for ease of viewing. Dashed line shows the equator

The Winter Solstice 2025
Sunlight at dawn on the Winter Solstice at NewgrangeJust a quick note to point out that the Winter Solstice in the Northern hemisphere happens today, Sunday 21st December 2025, at 15.03 UT (GMT).
In Dublin, sunrise yesterday (20th December) was at 8.37 am and sunset at 4.07 pm, while today the sunrise was at 8.38 am and sunset at 4.08 pm. Both sunrise and sunset happen later tomorrow than today, so the Solstice marks neither the latest sunrise nor the earliest sunset. We have to wait until January for the latest sunrise (8.40am) and the earliest sunset (4.06pm) actually happened over a week ago. The interval between the two events will, however, be about 2 seconds longer tomorrow than today; and yesterday the gap was about 4 seconds longer than today. Taking a day to be the interval between sunrise and sunset, today is the shortest.
For a full explanation of this, see this older Winter Solstice post.

A few hours ago, at 10:21 CET, Earth’s polar axis reached its maximum tilt away from the Sun as seen from the northern hemisphere 🌍
There will be a few more seconds of daylight here tomorrow 🌞
Rejoice 👼🏻
p.s. sorry, Australia 🙃

Today marks the Summer Solstice, the longest period of daylight of the year in the Southern Hemisphere. But not to be outdone, it's also the Winter Solstice, the longest period of darkness of the year, in the Northern Hemisphere. Science is cool. #DecemberSolstice

The #DecemberSolstice occured almost exactly five hours ago at 03:28Z marking the start of #Winter in the #NorthernHemisphere and #Summer in the #SouthernHemisphere. At that time, the #Sun would have been overhead at the #TropicOfCapricorn somewhere in #WesternAustralia.

I suppose, especially given the potentially #global social context of this platform, really be calling it #DecemberSolstice, rather than #WinterSolstice. I definitely have friends and contacts for whom today is the #SummerSolstice. I mean, I guess there's just calling it #Solstice, too, and relying on general timing to determine.

The #DecemberSolstice will occur today at about 15:59Z, that’s in just less than seven hours from the time of posting, bringing #winter here and #summer in other places. Locally, I’m looking forward to the days getting longer again.
