  2. There are not only small habits like fiddling with one’s fingers, but also sexual habits, habits of patterns of thought, and various activities. I think this, I conclude this, and that has become a habit. I live in habits; my whole life is a structure of habits. How is the mind to be aware of the entire mechanism of habit? One has a thousand and one habits: the way you brush your teeth, comb your hair, the way you read, the way you walk. One of the habits is wanting to become famous or wanting to become important. How is the mind to become aware of all these habits? Is it to become aware of one habit after another? Do you know how long that would take? I could spend the rest of my days watching each habit and yet not solve it. I am going to learn about it, I am going to find out; I’m not going to leave it. I am asking: is it possible for the mind to see the whole network of habits?

  5. One cannot go beyond thought, for the ‘one’, the maker of effort, is the result of thought. In uncovering the thought process, which is self-knowledge, the truth of ‘what is’ puts an end to the thought process. The truth of ‘what is’ is not to be found in any book, ancient or modern. What is found is the word, but not truth. One cannot find truth. The effort to find truth brings about a self-projected end, and that end is not truth. A result is not truth; a result is the continuation of thought, extended or projected. Only when thought ends is there truth. There is no ending of thought through compulsion, through discipline, through any form of resistance. Listening to the story of ‘what is’ brings its own liberation. It is truth that liberates, not the effort to be free.

  8. If you watch very carefully, you will see that though the response, the movement of thought, seems so swift, there are gaps, there are intervals between thoughts. Between two thoughts, there is a period of silence which is not related to the thought process. If you observe, you will see that that period of silence, that interval, is not of time. The discovery of that interval, the full experiencing of that interval, liberates you from conditioning – or rather it does not liberate ‘you’, but there is liberation from conditioning. So the understanding of the process of thinking is meditation. We are now not only discussing the structure and process of thought, which is the background of memory, experience and knowledge, but we are also finding out if the mind can liberate itself from the background. It is only when the mind is not giving continuity to thought, when it is still with a stillness that is not induced, without any causation – it is only then that there can be freedom from the background.

  10. Tough night again #tonight, two hours late off, so that’s a 12hr shift with no break again. I am trying to take care of myself, and made sure I ate breakfast #today. Granted I ate it at 2pm, but it was still #breakfast. Given I didn’t eat anything else until the two double cheeseburgers from the drive-thru on my way home at 4am, I’m glad I did.

#Day176 of #365HappyDays is therefore my breakfast. Greek yogurt, granola, blueberries and honey.

  11. Time and again the Trustees have asked Geoff to #reign it in, but he’s still here - messing around with the kids on sociable-media when he should be trying to sell postcards #FFS #Museum30 #Day176
