@fsmk_org I am disappointed to see updates/announcements of events that promote the use of LLMs.
I'm curious if the FSMK community has had a discussion on the legal, ethical and environmental impacts of the use of LLMs?
Notwithstanding the #CritiHype marketing onslaught by AI companies, the seemingly imminent takeover of the world by AI and the "get with it, or get left behind" FOMO, LLMs and their large-scale scraping and processing of copyleft content are antithetical to the FOSS movement - if FOSS is about enriching the commons and putting the commons to use to serve the needs of the many, how does entrenching the stranglehold that a few US companies have over many aspects of modern tech, software development and life in general achieve that?
Not to mention there are several pending lawsuits working their way through the US legal system about the flagrant copyright violations due to LLM scraping. What is FSMK's position on the fundamental conflict between copyleft FOSS code and LLMs' ingestion of such code without subsequently open-sourcing their weights/code?

I'm enjoying the schadenfreude of PocketOS getting badly burnt for vibing with AI.
The article has several problems, however:
Steganographic & access journalism; credulously repeating the founder's perspective
believing that AI can explain itself; it cannot, but it can extrude explanation shaped text
critihype; amping up the danger of AI while overstating its actual capabilities
almost zero examination of the founder's or his staffs' culpability; accepting the founder's framing of the AI and the cloud provider being to blame
mostly ignoring the amateur backup policy — they had no offsite, redundant backup; there's a throwaway comment at the end that effectively gives them a pass
author anthropmorphizes the AI and repeats the founder doing the same
no security or AI critic consulted to offer an outside perspective or criticism of PocketOS' behavior

@danmcquillan Oh boy...I have long said that all of those fantasies our civilization has about having robots/androids/AI is a creepy, "evolved" expression of the desire for human slaves. But...yeah, I don't think we're anywhere near "conscious AI". Let's call this #critihype

Critique de film
Alienoid (2022)

I don't want to crank the lever and cry 'SCIENCE BRO!' as such, but if your book's title has the word 'science' in it, then - and I did judge the book by its cover - its theses adopt the verisimilitude of having stood up to the scientific method. Which is why the first chapter is, more or less, underpinned by a #critihype take on evolutionary psychology, a proposed subfield notorious for producing unfalsifiable just-so theories at a pace too rapid to be considered happenstance.

Two companies, one of which has promised autonomous cars since 2018 & the other failing at them completely launch a project depending on fleets of flawless autonomous vehicles & it's treated as if it's something other than another SV pipe dream?
Even trying to hold a flippant tone, how is #Gizmodo doing anything but #critihype here?

We should introduce the securities that #UBI is supposed to give people, for many reasons.
But not because #generativeModels "#AI" is capable of replacing people. That‘s buying into destructive #critihype about the capabilities of the technology.
GenMods *cannot* replace people to the same quality, and they‘re giant tools to plaster shut the human creative sharing space with so much useless signal it drowns out human creativity.

If your *boss* thinks an AI can do your job, and AI critics are all running around with their hair on fire, shouting about the coming AI jobpocalypse, then maybe the AI really *can* do your job?

There's a name for this kind of criticism: #CritiHype, coined by #LeeVinsel, who points to many reasons for its persistence, including the fact that it constitutes an "academic business-model":

That's the true cost of all the automation-driven unemployment #CritiHype: while we're nowhere near a place where bots can steal your job, we're certainly at the point where your boss can be suckered into firing you and replacing you with a bot that *fails* at doing your job:

There's a lot of credulous repetition of these claims, and not just by AI's boosters. AI *critics* are also prone to engaging in what Lee Vinsel calls #CritiHype: criticizing something by repeating its boosters' claims without interrogating them to see if they're true:

Out now: "Versprochene Realität" (written with Ortrun https://Bargholz.xyz) in "Bildhafte Räume, begehbare Bilder" (Eds. Kassandra Nakas & Philipp Reinfeld): https://www.fink.de/edcollchap-oa/book/9783846767238/BP000019.xml #OpenAccess
Brief English summary: Departure point for the text is the open call for the exhibition "In VR we trust" (https://trust.invr.info, curated with https://DanielHengst.de/): "Do you trust in VR? [...] But why?". We argue that rather than 'virtual reality' it should be called 'promised reality' (in German this works as a word pun). Most #VR applications are supposed solutions looking for a problem.
So why do producers, institutions and consumers engage with VR at all? We see curious experimentation with the medium itself as a main driver – like a child getting a new gadget for Christmas, engagement with VR often has exploration as its main purpose (rather than being a tool for another goal). Since adults can't say "I want funding and time to play around with this new cool gadget!" they come up with justifications, such as VR supposedly being an "empathy machine" (evidence is weak). Through this – and obviously for marketing reasons – VR is a promise above all. This perspective matters in multiple ways:
- VR diverges resources from other, maybe more effective, investments: e.g. Axon – known for the totally-not-lethal-lethal Taser – tries to sell VR-based police training.
- these promises shape (business) future: Meta's push for VR can be understood as another attempt at a self-fulfilling prophecy (like the failed "pivot to video"), hoping to bind content creators and users to their platform long term
- VR art feeds these promises and justifies this exploration, becoming part of a marketing systemVR art could be understood not as art doing "something with a VR headset" but as art relating to these promises and virtuality in a broad sense. We showcase a work by Dani Ploeger and one of ourselves. We want a more critical engagement with VR, without falling for #CritiHype.

When FB critics repeat these claims, they're engaged in #critihype, Lee Vinsel's useful coinage describing criticism that serves to bolster the target's own propaganda. If FB are evil geniuses, well, at least they're still *geniuses.*
https://sts-news.medium.com/youre-doing-it-wrong-notes-on-criticism-and-technology-hype-18b08b4307e5
Some Facebookers doubtless believe their own hype, but that doesn't mean we have to join them in self-delusion.
