...on (exceptions possible, OFC.)
Needless to say, as we have seen from disaster reports from #Greece and #Italy, for instance, in recent years, the rate of top-soil #Erosion in the areas hit by such extreme-weather events, is bound to increase exponentially initially. This, in turn--and this is my understanding not being a #Climatologist either--will feed into the #Desertification feedback loop.
In short:
These catastrophic events may not be decades away anymore, but... -

Is #summer getting longer where you live? See how temperatures changed.
The analysis, conducted by #climatologist #BrianBrettschneider, examined the hottest 90 days of the year from 1965 to 1994 and compared their frequency over 1995 to 2024. He found that the temperatures that used to kick off the hottest three months of the year are expanding beyond the calendar definition of summer.

What a #Climatologistβs #Defamation Case Victory Means for #Scientists
A jury awarded #MichaelMann more than $1 millionβraising hopes for scientists who are attacked politically because of their work
Mann tells Nature that he hopes the win βsignals the beginning of the end of the open season on scientists by ideologically motivated bad actors. And maybe, just maybe, that facts and reason still matter even in todayβs fraught political economy.β

I did not doubt that, nor did I see a contradiction of any sort.
Why is the "#ClimateChange" argument oversold?Yes, the only thing humanity might achieve in the medium term is to slow down the GROWTH RATE of the #ClimateCatastrophe (my personal opinion, based on a veteran #climatologist, @[email protected].
I am exasperated that we are not undergoing mass-building projects (agriculture, water management, housing - see German thread.)
BTW, I am not familiar with "ICE machines"...?

@HumToTable
I'm no #climatologist, but I do have a theory about what's happening to central #TX. The Gulf is overheating and the heat is pushing what would have been hurricane/storms northward. Could be wrong but ... how are y'all doing? -

#Siberia swelters in record-breaking temperatures amid its βworst heat wave in historyβ
These remote regions tend to see large monthly and yearly temperature fluctuations, but the last few decades have seen a strong warming trend.
By Laura Paddison, Jun 9, 2023
"Despite only being early June, records are tumbling across parts of Siberia as extreme heat pushes into unusually high latitudes.
"Last Saturday, temperatures reached 37.9 degrees Celsius (100.2 Fahrenheit) in Jalturovosk, its hottest day in history, according to the #climatologist Maximiliano Herrera, who tracks #ExtremeTemperatures across the globe.
"A slew of temperature records have fallen in Siberia since then.
"Several all-time heat records were broken on Wednesday, including in Baevo, which reached 39.6 degrees Celsius (103.3 Fahrenheit), and Barnaul, which hit 38.5 degrees Celsius (101.3 Fahrenheit)."

@vwbusguy While installing weather stations on Baffin Island for a #climatologist I heard the story of researchers who got very sick eating the liver of a Bearded Seal despite warnings from local Inuit. Apparently Vitamin A accumulates in this species' liver and is toxic in high doses.

This evening the #DanskMeteorologiskSelskab (#DanishMeteorologicalSociety) is holding a symposium to recognise the contribution of our long-time editor and #DMIdk #climatologist John Cappelen.
Coincidentally, the society's winter issue arrived today too and there's not much doubt about how our #Winter is changing in Denmark

Hello mastonauts, I used to follow a number of climate scientists on Twitter, but they probably haven't started their migration yet... Could you recommend some #climatologist or climate scientist accounts to follow on Mastodon? #climate #giec #climatechange #changementclimatique (FR/EN...)

There are now a nice bunch of #climatologist|s here. Also showing how broad #ClimateScience is.
@micefearboggis is famous for the UK sea surface temperature dataset.
@Ruth_Mottram works on Greenland.
@wolfgangcramer is an IPCC author working on climate & biodiversity.
@tasvo is an Antarctic paleo climatologist.
@saravicca works on the carbon cycle.
@arthurgessler studies ecosystem under global change.
@steve studies climate models, but not like you expect. 1/2

We launched a new group to promote the translation of the scientific literature https://variable-variability.blogspot.com/2021/05/launched-new-group-translations-scientific-literature.html
We are naturally also on the Fediverse: @TranslateScience
In my own post on the group I write about how I changed from thinking English is just a basic science skill, like statistics and coding, to starting this group due to my work as #climatologist.
Translating scientific works is part of #OpenScience. Language barriers should not waste scientific talent.
