My ace #DMIdk colleague Steffen Malskjær Olsen opening day 2 of the #NCKFSymposium with a balanced look at the future of the #AMOC under #ClimateChange

Looking forward to welcoming the @oceaniceEU community to #DMIdk today for our annual meeting. I think I'm correct in saying it's the first time we have had such a large gathering of #Antarctic focused #Science here at the institute, though I doubt it will be the last #SeaLevelRise #Ocean #IceSheet

This storm that #DMIdk is forecasting for SE #Greenland will likely bring melt at lower elevations but snow higher up that may well delay the onset of the ablation season further.

As we prepare to move from #DMIdk's university style offices to a new open plan office (with #hotdesking 😒) later this year, @TimHarford's podcast on how (not to) #design an office + associated concepts like #power + the ability to influence your own space seems very relevant.

Star guest at #DMIdk's colloquium today. Danish #Astronaut #AndreasMogensen will spend 6 months on the #ISS where he will be carrying out some experimental observations of #Earthshine on the #Moon in collaboration with my colleague @Hotblack43 to assess #Clouds surface #albedo and to scope a new #Satellite mission to assess #TOA #Radiation in #ClimateModels

Extraordinary new record high temperature in #Greenland: the capital #Nuuk recorded 15.2C as a result of a #FøhnWind event
#DMIdk's #News item on the event shows how the warm winds bring these high temperatures

Amid #ChatGPT hype there has been a remarkable advance in use of #machineLearning for #Weather + #Climate- my ace #DMIdk colleague Peter Ukkonen shared this (uses #ECMWF #ERA5 as training data!)
"Our results show GraphCast is more accurate than ECMWF’s deterministic operational forecasting system, HRES, on 90.0% of the 2760 variable + lead time combinations ... GraphCast can generate a 10-day forecast (35Gb of data) in under 60 seconds on Cloud TPU v4 hardware."

January 2023 was the lowest recorded #Antarctic #SeaIce extent on record. My #dmidk colleagues have been working with #osisaf data for years and wrote a bit about it here (in Danish but DeepL works)
-
Den gennemsnitlige havisudbredelse for januar er på sit laveste siden 1979, hvor overvågningen af havis med satellitter blev sat i system. Dermed ser denne sommer ud til at følge trenden for havisens lave udbredelse de seneste år i Antarktis.

Apparently it's #CTDAppreciationDay so here is part of a cartoon I made featuring the #DMIdk and some curious #LegoScientists plus their old friends #LegoIceMan and #LegoBatGirl.

Whole day spent planning and plotting the next year or two of #HCLIM simulations at #DMIdk - so lucky have to such generous and smart colleagues.
Can't wait to get going, but boy do we have a lot of work to do...

Decided to write a little intro to the #fieldwork and #science at the #DMIdk #FieldLaboratory of #Qaanaaq.
Beats the washing up on #ChristmasDay I suppose?
Will probably edit later and I will certain add more links and expand with some new posts as I get time...

Fantastic + beautifully illustrated article in Danish Newspaper #InformationDK about the project my #DMIdk colleague Steffen M Olsen has pioneered over the last 15 years in #Qaanaaq NW #Greenland.
And now we're adding #glaciers + #IceSheets as part of #NCKF work.
In Danish but try DeepL to translate.
This should be a gift link! 🎁 -
And to launch the @greenlandicesheet here is today's news from the #Greenland #IceSheet...
Daily #SurfaceMassBalance from #DMIdk's weather + #SMB model as shown the #PolarPortal

Time for another #FridayFieldworkPhoto from #InglefieldBredning #Greenland from June 2021.
In the field, everyone lends a hand: Here we are hauling up the mooring that my #DMIdk colleague #SteffenOlsen leaves out every year to measure ocean temperature, salinity etc through the winter using #SeaIce as a #science platform.
The red buoy marks the position, the water here is 3-500m deep so pulling it up from the bottom takes some time + muscle power.

This evening the #DanskMeteorologiskSelskab (#DanishMeteorologicalSociety) is holding a symposium to recognise the contribution of our long-time editor and #DMIdk #climatologist John Cappelen.
Coincidentally, the society's winter issue arrived today too and there's not much doubt about how our #Winter is changing in Denmark
