  1. I really hope they go through with at least a trial closure. It's understandable that people struggle to imagine traffic evaporation because it's so rarely experienced. It's hard to imagine an oppressor just disappearing overnight.

It would take less than a week for everybody to be on-board once they see the modal filters working.

  2. “Tempers flared in #NorthRichmond on Monday morning as #cyclists gathered to protest a controversial move to narrow bike lanes on a main thoroughfare and reintroduce 48 #CarParking spaces. The project, described by the #CityOfYarra #council as a “#GlowUp”, involves road resurfacing and the relocation of existing bike lane bollards between #HoddleSt and #ChurchSt...

“The work marks the end of a five-year trial of wide, protected lanes that have become a focal point of local political division.”

Mayor #StephenJolly defended the works on Monday, saying the current infrastructure was a “#BikeSuperhighway that’s not used that much”.

“It’s about sharing and not listening to just one interest group,” Jolly said. “These changes will make the bike lane the same width it is on #AlbertStreet that it continues from, while allowing locals #BetterAccess to their Buddhist Temple, homes and businesses and also get some parking back.”

  8. Works to narrow the Elizabeth St Bike lanes in Richmond are starting on Monday 16th March.

Sadly I'm sure this will be a surprise to a bunch of people that use this route and haven't engaged.

This route is used by 1000 people on bikes every day.

The bike lane is being narrowed from 2.1m to 1.5m but that 1.5m includes the unrideable gutter.

  9. If you're in City of Yarra make sure your councilors know that you support this.

It definitely looks like it could easily be derailed by a fight about a small amount of parking.

  14. I don't like their 'narrow the bike lane' policy, but I very much enjoy their 'make the cops pay for parking' policy.

"Since having their permits cancelled, officers at the Richmond station have been slugged with regular parking fines, totalling thousands of dollars a year."

These are permits for their personal cars and of course the entitled cops decided to ignore the parking policy and got thousands of dollars of fines.

  15. If you live in the City of Yarra or ride down Wellington St you've got until Monday to tell the council you want Wellington St to be a bicycle street.

  16. Wow!

City Of Yarra wants to add modal filters to Wellington St Collingwood.

I grew up on Wellington St, it was 60km/h until the default speed limit was dropped to 50km/h in the early 2000 and in the 20yrs I lived there 2 cars crashed in to my house.

It's now been 30km/h for a number of years and has protected bike lanes along a large section.

This plan is to retain the parking and make it a cycle street by adding a modal filter to prevent through traffic.

If they can pull off the cycle street it will be amazing, but if they fail to reduce traffic enough to make it feel safe then it won't be.

  17. I've been sick recently so I wasn't able to make it to the Yarra council meeting.

But I'm catching up on watching the live stream and it's been great to see the bike lobby in full force speaking against the changes to the bike lane even given that the Yarra council is going to ignore it.

It's really disappointing to see more accusations from some residents that the removal of under-subscribed car parking for a bike lane is somehow racist or that there wasn't any community consultation (multiple rounds of consultation over many years).

A resident talked about needing to 'have a compromise' because the 15m wide street isn't wide enough, of course the current compromise where 2/3rds of the space is allocated to cars isn't enough and he wants a more fair compromise where 4/5ths of space is allocated to cars.

Some residents have said that the lanes aren't well used, but they're serving over 1000 bike trips a day which is pretty impressive given that Elizabeth st is the eastern end of the connected bicycle infrastructure with relatively poor connections to most of it's catchment area.

The people advocating for the bike lanes have all the facts and data behind them. The people advocating against it have just their selfish wish that one of the 59 parking spots this change will add back will be available to them out of the thousands of other people that live on this street.

My general hope is that the state DTP will reject the council's plan and refuse to provide funding for it.

  18. It's important to note that the council officer's report clearly stated that bike lanes this narrow would open the council up to liability because they don't meet minimum Department of Transport requirements.

These lanes are narrower than the original non-protected lanes from 2019 and are not wide enough for riders to be outside the passenger side door zone.

The narrow buffer(60cm) between parking and the bike lane means that people entering and exiting on the passenger side will do that in to bicycle traffic with no space to safely stand while waiting to cross the bike lane and bike riders having no space to go around the people standing in the bike lane. This means that the space for bicycles is effectively much less than the stated width of 1.5m

These changes will turn Elizabeth St from a good standard bicycle lane in to the worst protected bike lane in Melbourne. (Stealing that title from Albert St, which has a similar layout but is slightly saved by having the parking be a clear way during peak commuter times )

The bike lanes won't be wide enough for anyone to safely/comfortably overtake which will make this more dangerous and a much less attractive route for slow moving children or elderly people.

  19. The only workable option was rejected by the council and then the mayor ambushed the meeting with this completely unworkable design.

Now councilors are talking about the need to 'compromise' and for the community to come together. But the only people expected to compromise are the people that want to ride in safe and comfortable infrastructure.

  20. There is going to be a rally before the Yarra council meeting outside the Richmond Townhall to support the Elizabeth St bike lanes.

" Meet us at 6pm on Tuesday 8 April 2025 on the Richmond Town Hall steps for a rally supporting safe cycling infrastructure & our petition! Residents will speak about protecting these much loved lanes, our petition being tabled at this council meeting and how we love safe, wide bike lanes. "

  21. Gotta say I'm finding it pretty hard to get too upset about the City of Yarra "bin tax" given it's identical to the waste collection charge that every other council in Victoria already has in place. #Melbourne #LocalGovernment #CityOfYarra theage.com.au/national/victori
