Behold the revolutionary #Chafa, where 21st-century #tech meets the artistic flair of a 1980s dot matrix printer. 🎨✨ Get ready to squint in awe at "reasonable approximations" of images, because who needs high-res when you have ANSI X3.64? 🙄🤦♂️

This program written in C will render the matrix effect in the terminal, while rendering an image, allowing animation of this image in one or two dimensions.
Demo video:https://youtu.be/fUZXQDAQJ1wImage rendering is accomplished with the help of chafa:

@frigginglorious Glad to hear it! There are bindings for Python and Javascript (via wasm) too. If you have questions, come find us on Matrix or IRC (#chafa).

How to display an image in a console...
Learning about new old stuff... or old new stuff. I'm not sure which.

#TIL about #lsix (https://github.com/hackerb9/lsix) and calling #xterm with the option "-ti vt340" to be able to display inline images inside an xterm—thanks to lsix having just arrived in #DebianUnstable: https://packages.debian.org/sid/lsix
These inline images (or the backend used to display them) seem to be called #sixel graphics. And they're said to work transparently through SSH. Maybe better than #chafa or #catimg.
#BloomScrolling on the terminal! 😉

TIL about #chafa
Perhaps I've been living under a rock for a few years? But it seems like a very useful tool:
https://github.com/hpjansson/chafa
I definitely think #telescope (#gemini browser) will benefit from this in some way... just need to think how.

chafa-1.8 enables sixels on foot by default.
If you prefer non-sixel output, try "chafa --symbols border+block+stipple+sextant+wedge" with foot >= 1.9!

#Chafa is a #terminal image displayer.
Chafa supports many common image formats, including still formats like PNG as well as animated GIFs. Chafa can use a larger character set than other image printers, allowing for a much higher fidelity output. Chafa supports several different color modes, including true color. Chafa has a #library interface.

New blog posting: Pictures in pure #HTML with #chafa and #aha https://noone.org/blog/English/Computer/Pictures%20in%20pure%20HTML%20with%20chafa%20and%20aha.futile
It even works in text browsers — well, at least in one text browser, namely #elinks.
