  1. Acmispon prostratus (Beach Lotus, Nutall's Acmispon) is a rare California native plant in the pea family (Fabaceae) that is threatened and endangered due to habitat lost to coastal development. Imagine my excitement when I unexpectedly found it growing in a coastal dune restoration area!

  2. Unknown "paintbrush", Castilleja species, on a steep slope above Highway 101 north of Leggett California. I passed by this on the way to checking out the wallflower in the previous post. Getting this picture involved scrambling up a steep, collapsing slope with patches of poison oak.

  3. Clintonia andrewsiana
There is a lovely little patch of these in the old growth redwoods just north of Redway, CA. I saw them for the first time last year.

  5. Not that it would be cheap to do, but one wonders whether a shepherd dog could also be trained to smell out toxic plants and keep the herd away from them... #California #CANativePlants

  6. The report just uses the common name instead of a more precise scientific name, but it seems it may be this plant: calflora.org/app/taxon?crn=7332

I'm seeing conflicting opinions about whether snakeroot is toxic to livestock, but UCANR has put out a bulletin about California plants that *are* toxic to livestock here: ucanr.edu/sites/default/files/

  10. Planning to guerilla garden some California poppies along one of our roads in the South Bay, but I was hoping to do it after a rain. But it is getting to be time, so I think I'm gonna do it anyway. Do you think it will work?

  11. @eleland I'm not yet aware of someone who posts that as the majority of their posts. However, you can find folks who talk about CA native plants and plants that are invasive in CA through hashtags.

  13. Suddenly noticed one of the weeds at my feet was possibly a native Fabaceae. Took photos with the loupe to look up when I got home.

Looks like it may be Acmispon americanus. It's not as fuzzy as the "What grows here?" search on Calflora, and has a little cock's comb center to the wing. calflora.org/app/taxon?crn=112 #CANativePlants #Botany

  14. Prunus illicifolia tree allowed to grow to its full mature height. This one is just over 2 stories tall (I didn't have a way to take more accurate measurements) and standing at a fenceline.

  15. A few other random photos, mostly of the large patch of Oregon Grape that grows nearby. It’s thriving and spreading, mostly because of the mild, wet winter and because the deer refuse to eat it. I like the way the new leaves are a bright crimson that turns into glossy green. The yellow flowers will turn into purple berries, hence the “grape” name. From what I read, they’re edible, but just barely and don’t taste that great.
