Conoce quiénes son los mormones, cómo nació la Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días, sus principales creencias, su llegada a México y la influencia que mantiene en la actualidad.

Con más de 17 millones de integrantes en más de 180 países y territorios, la Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días se ha consolidado como una de las organizaciones religiosas cristianas de mayor crecimiento a nivel mundial. Aunque durante más de un siglo sus miembros fueron conocidos popularmente como «mormones», la institución solicita actualmente que se utilice su nombre oficial o la expresión «Santos de los Últimos Días».
El término «mormón» proviene del Libro de Mormón, una de las escrituras sagradas de esta Iglesia y que, junto con la Biblia, constituye la base de sus enseñanzas religiosas. Para los creyentes, este libro es otro testamento de Jesucristo y contiene registros de antiguos pueblos que habitaron el continente americano.
Actualmente, México es uno de los países con mayor número de fieles de esta confesión religiosa, con alrededor de 1.5 millones de miembros distribuidos en miles de congregaciones y decenas de templos en funcionamiento o construcción.
El origen de la Iglesia
La historia de esta organización religiosa comenzó con Joseph Smith Jr., quien, de acuerdo con la doctrina oficial de la Iglesia, afirmó haber recibido en 1820 una manifestación de Dios Padre y de Jesucristo.
Tres años después, según su testimonio, el ángel Moroni le mostró el lugar donde se encontraban unas planchas de oro que contenían antiguos registros religiosos. Smith aseguró haber traducido esos textos «por el poder de Dios», dando origen al Libro de Mormón.
El 6 de abril de 1830 organizó formalmente la Iglesia en el estado de Nueva York. Desde sus primeros años, el movimiento enfrentó conflictos religiosos, sociales y políticos que obligaron a sus integrantes a trasladarse en diversas ocasiones dentro de Estados Unidos.
El éxodo hacia Utah
Tras el asesinato de Joseph Smith en 1844, el liderazgo fue asumido por Brigham Young, quien encabezó uno de los movimientos migratorios más importantes de la historia estadounidense.
Entre 1846 y 1847 condujo a miles de seguidores hasta el valle del Gran Lago Salado, donde establecieron la comunidad que posteriormente daría origen a Salt Lake City, actual capital del estado de Utah y sede mundial de la Iglesia.
¿Cómo llegaron los mormones a México?
La presencia de los Santos de los Últimos Días en México comenzó principalmente durante la década de 1880.
En aquella época, el gobierno estadounidense endureció las medidas contra la práctica de la poligamia, que entonces era permitida por una parte de la Iglesia. Ante ese escenario, diversas familias buscaron establecerse fuera del país.
Durante el gobierno de Porfirio Díaz, México autorizó la instalación de colonias agrícolas en el norte del territorio nacional, principalmente en Chihuahua y Sonora.
Así surgieron comunidades como:
- Colonia Juárez.
- Colonia Dublán.
- Colonia Díaz.
Estas poblaciones impulsaron actividades agrícolas y ganaderas, desarrollaron sistemas de riego, fundaron escuelas, hospitales y cooperativas, dejando una influencia que aún permanece en la región.
El fin de la poligamia
En 1890, el entonces presidente de la Iglesia, Wilford Woodruff, emitió un manifiesto mediante el cual se suspendió oficialmente la práctica de la poligamia.
Desde entonces, La Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días prohíbe esta práctica.
Los grupos que actualmente mantienen matrimonios plurales pertenecen a organizaciones fundamentalistas independientes y no forman parte de la Iglesia.
Principales creencias
Entre las enseñanzas centrales de los Santos de los Últimos Días se encuentran:
- Jesucristo es el Salvador del mundo.
- La Biblia y el Libro de Mormón son escrituras sagradas.
- Dios continúa revelando su voluntad mediante profetas.
- La familia ocupa un papel central en el plan de salvación.
- Existen ordenanzas religiosas que se realizan en los templos.
- Hay vida después de la muerte.
- Se promueve el servicio comunitario y el voluntariado.
La vida cotidiana de los fieles
Las actividades habituales de los miembros incluyen la asistencia a reuniones religiosas los domingos, el estudio de las escrituras, la oración diaria, la participación en actividades familiares y el servicio voluntario.
Además, miles de jóvenes realizan misiones religiosas de entre 18 y 24 meses en distintos países como parte de su formación espiritual.
Templos y capillas
La Iglesia distingue claramente entre templos y capillas.
Las capillas permanecen abiertas al público y son utilizadas para las reuniones religiosas semanales.
Los templos, en cambio, son considerados edificios sagrados donde se celebran ceremonias especiales como matrimonios eternos, bautismos vicarios por antepasados e investiduras religiosas. Una vez dedicados, únicamente pueden ingresar miembros que cumplen determinados requisitos establecidos por la Iglesia.
En México existen templos en ciudades como Ciudad de México, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Mérida, Puebla, Tijuana y Oaxaca, además de otros en construcción.
Organización de la Iglesia
La estructura de gobierno está encabezada por un presidente, considerado profeta por los creyentes, acompañado por dos consejeros y el Quórum de los Doce Apóstoles.
La organización también cuenta con autoridades generales, presidentes de área, presidentes de estaca y obispos.
En el ámbito local, la mayoría de los cargos son desempeñados por voluntarios que no reciben remuneración.
Programas de ayuda humanitaria
La Iglesia participa de manera constante en proyectos de asistencia social y humanitaria, entre ellos:
- atención a desastres naturales;
- distribución de alimentos;
- suministro de agua potable;
- apoyo médico;
- entrega de sillas de ruedas;
- capacitación agrícola;
- ayuda a personas refugiadas.
Estas acciones suelen realizarse en coordinación con autoridades y organizaciones civiles.
Personajes de origen mormón
Entre las figuras públicas vinculadas a esta Iglesia destacan Mitt Romney, exgobernador de Massachusetts y exsenador por Utah; George Romney, exgobernador de Michigan; y el cantante David Archuleta, quien creció dentro de esta tradición religiosa.
En México, diversas familias establecidas en las colonias de Chihuahua y Sonora han tenido participación en actividades agrícolas, empresariales y comunitarias.
Controversias y desafíos
Como otras organizaciones religiosas de alcance internacional, la Iglesia ha enfrentado debates relacionados con la poligamia durante el siglo XIX, el papel de la mujer dentro de su estructura, su postura respecto a temas LGBTQ+, la transparencia financiera en algunos países y casos de abuso sexual cometidos por miembros o líderes locales.
La institución sostiene que estos casos deben investigarse conforme a sus políticas internas y a la legislación vigente de cada país.
Una influencia que trasciende la religión
La migración de los Santos de los Últimos Días contribuyó al desarrollo del actual estado de Utah y dejó una huella histórica en el norte de México mediante el establecimiento de comunidades agrícolas que impulsaron el desarrollo regional.
