One of my first summer jobs was being an activities counsellor at a provincial park. One night, we were doing a Hallowe’en in the summer event, and I was reading Edgar Allan Poe stories aloud to kids. About halfway through a story, a supervisor came up to me and told me the stories were too complicated for children, so I had to simplify the language.
