@joyousjoyness I'm a single father. My son's grown up now, but for the first 19 years of his life I read to him every night. We read many hundreds of books. I was already an expert on children's and YA books, with quite a collection; so it was a real joy to be able to read those books to my son, many of which had been read to me as a toddler by my own parents.

As he grew up I read the books that I read as a child, and then a teen, and then as an adult. His vocabulary is exceptional as a result, and he's quite the reader himself.

I can't possibly stress how incredibly helpful all that reading turned out to be. My son and I share hundreds of stories, plots, characters, and jokes from all that reading. We have never lacked for things to talk about, because we have so much in common. When he hit puberty, we never drifted apart the way many parents and children do; there was just so much that we shared.

It was the best thing I ever did! I've recommended a lot of the books we read to other parents, and I've even been on panels at conventions about children's and YA literature.

I've finished: Calypso by Oliver K. Langmead

This is a generation colony ship sci-fi novel.

One of the first scenes introduces a Terra-formed Mars. The technological hurdles have been solved. Overcoming technical issues inherent in such a grand project is not the subject of this novel.

It is not nature but human nature Calypso struggles with.

What form should such a colony take? What toll will such a project take on its crew?

Calypso is also a literary experiment, giving different view point characters different literary styles. Including a view point written entirely in verse. I enjoyed this aspect and applaud the audiobook Producers for using distinct narrators for the different viewpoints.

I've finished: The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean

A different and refreshing take on the vampire trope. Exploring a society of information eaters.

But this is first and foremost the story of a young mother's rebellion against the patriarchy. A long emotional journey with no easy choices.

On one hand it is a very extreme novel, with evil and cruelty that would in many cases seem cartoonish. However Sunyi Dean manages to build a world where the characters motivations are clear and their actions are a understood as logical within their own frame of reference.

3 Generationen von Frauen, das System, die Muster, die Spiegelungen in den Biografien, die wiederkehrenden Themen vom Männerhaben und -nichthaben und Kinderkriegen und nicht und das Schweigen darüber. Auch Sprachkunst natürlich und austriazistischer Duktus, dass es sogar mir zuviel geworden ist. Schon lesenswert und eine Welt evozierend aber letztlich doch das am wenigsten Originelle von den 3en.
