  1. It’s 2026, tech is evolving at lightning speed, yet bilingual keyboards on smartphones are still deeply broken. I tried using a single combined layout for Polish and English on my iPhone, hoping for a seamless experience. Instead, it’s been a non-stop battle with autocorrect. It treats Polish grammar as a typo and forces English structures onto everything. Even Gboard does the same. Instead of convenience, I just got frustrated. So, I’m officially going back to basics: two separate keyboards and manual switching via the globe icon. At least my phone stopped pretending it knows what I want to type better than I do. Has anyone actually found a magic fix for this, or are we all just tap-tap-tapping that globe icon forever? 🌐😉 #Apple #iOS #Gboard #BilingualProblems #Languages #TechTalk #Multilingual #Blind

  3. I had an odd interaction with a coworker. He was voicing an annoyance with me that he could tell when I was thinking in English. Because my pronunciation was always off, word choice different and my voice was "Etwas Höher" ( a little higher ). He had to ask, "is that even Taylor?".

English requires more gender performance than German does.
@thatfrisiangirlish has even said that there's more German growl to my english and I give less care to how high my voice is.

It's just odd to me some of these bilingual things that I don't even notice but people around me pick up on.

  5. Sometimes you need to step outside of your own language to understand the oddities of your own. I was trying to make sense of the verb erzahlen. Which is like to tell a story. Er- is pretty close to re- in English and zahlen means to count so I had to ask myself "What the hell is Recount".

Or yesterday it struck me that verstehen is a combination of the prefix ver and stehen. Ver is a harder prefix to get into than ver but Stehen means to stand. I was like what the hell. What is that in English .... UnderSTAND?! How on earth did I not catch that my language is so strange?!

  7. Denglish and Spanglish and other mixed languages are usually to make things cuter or make things flow better than they would in their mother tongue or are from border cultures or whatever. But sometimes they are from a poor bilingual bisexual that needs more eeps and more coffee. For today I did my most disgraceful Denglish ever in the shower

    Why muss I wakey sein?

I was trying to say "Why do I have to be wakey" but replaced the verbs with German. It was painful. Send help ... and also coffee.

  9. Sometimes being bilingual leads to odd problems. Like Germans not taking the bald Eagle seriously due to how much Eagle sounds like der Igel ( The Hedgehog ).

I am now having the reverse problem. I have read Dune, Frank Herbet quite a few times so now I am reading it in German. The word for a Duke is der Herzog. I cannot take them calling him "Der kühne aufrechte Herzog" and not imagine him as a hedgehog.

I will not fear the Atreides Hedgehog, fear is the little death ....

  11. "Being bilingual has never impacted my fluency in English," I think to myself as I count to sixty-ten in my head. #BilingualProblems

  12. toddler is starting to read hiragana and on tonight’s dog walk we went round looking at car number plates, trying to read the first character of each one

got to て*, and she whips round and confidently says, “Hand!!” 🥹😂 #BilingualProblems

(*non-J-speakers: て is read “te” which, yes, is Japanese for “hand” (手))

  14. @apps if someday you had nothing higher priority, it would be nice if I could set preferred posting languages so when I change language on my post my preferred languages are at the top so I don't have to scroll through the list so much :ablobcatheart: #BilingualProblems

  16. Meanwhile...... When I went from writing to IT at work to cleaning up my digital accounts, I forgot that I had the Cyrillic keyboard turned on. Google understood me anyway. Thanks, Google!
