In retrospect, glad I took my more expensive MTB on the plane if this is how it would have gone getting shipped.
Not sure WTF FedEx did with my poor touring bike, fingers crossed it's not as bad as it looks.
People talk shit about baggage handlers and bikes, but I've never had a bike box on a commercial flight come out looking this bad!

Rolls developed from my new (old) camera, and I'm quite pleased with them! Not bad for a camera older than me :)
1. Norway cycle tour
2. Frozen Aussenalster in Hamburg
3. Easter cycle tour on the Mosel -
Big day today!
Manuscript coauthor comments done and sent to the one outstanding coauthor ✅️
Flights booked to return home ✅️
Bike packed and started the long route to Norway ✅️
🚈🚄🚈⛴️ over the next 44 hrs, and then the cycling begins. For now the bike feels heavy as shit, and still food to add! Feeling strong enough for extravagances like a bottle of South African bought with one of my touring pals in Cape Town last year.

I had a very nice weekend riding the Naheradweg over 2 days. We started at the Nahequelle (source of the Nahe), continued to Bingen (where the river meets the Rhein), and then home to Mainz.
Would absolutely recommend. The upper part (before Idar-Oberstein) is particularly beautiful, but it's all nice. Mostly on quiet trails with just a little bit of road riding. I found it to be a lot like the Mosel, but fewer tourists and with more hills. A complementary experience!

We had a splendid Sunday riding through the Rheingau sampling the goods. I'd never had a white Merlot before! Highlight was Schloss Vollrads, for both the wine and the grounds.

Suddenly I find myself on the downhill slope to going home, with about 10 weeks left in Germany!
The farewell Europe tour mainly consists of going cycle touring in Norway as a bucketlist item - we're hoping to do the Mjølkevegen, but Norway actually had an average winter this year, and there are a couple of passes that still need to open. I'm keeping an eye on the Sentinel imagery and the long-term forecast and thinking warm thoughts... the good news is there are plenty of alternatives and it all looks spectacular.
The route, for those interested: https://cyclenorway.com/en/routes/mjolkevegen_route/mjolkevegen/

Long weekend could not have been better. Great cycling, great camp-sites, great food, wine, and company. The Mosel did not disappoint, although I could have done without 70 km of headwind on Sunday 😅
If I did it again, I would skip the part from Koblenz to Cochem, and maybe do it over four days instead of 3 to have time to stop to see more along the way. Nonetheless, and excellent long weekend.

Nothing like a cycle tour as an excuse to pay some attention to the bike.
Washed, everything tightened, tyres installed. So ready for a few days tootling up the Mosel.
This is my third set of g-ones, such a solid everyday tyre. Very rarely get punctures, nice profile for not too chunky gravel, and they go on easy.

I did another interview with a #bike person. Have a read of my chat with Caz here. Feel free to subscribe if you want to read more of my bike-themed stuff.

Housemate asked to borrow my bike. No worries, says I, just be aware the shifters are on the bar ends, and the brakes are wired backwards to what you're used to. For some reason he changed his mind? No appreciation for style.

Ultracycling fans, the documentary of Lael Wilcox's record-setting ride around the world is on youtube!

The 2025 Stadtradeln/city cycling competition is coming soon!
Register as either an individual or a team :) MPIC has a team, apparently we're aiming to beat our ~10000 km effort last year!

Even casual cycling fans should get a kick out of this. Sarah Ruggins is on track to take the lejogle overall (!!) Record! Lejogle is a cycling route from Land's end to John O'Groats and back again. Just a casual 2700 km...
So far Sarah is averaging ~500 km a day, and should be finished tomorrow, she's got just over 400 km to go.

Labour Day well spent slowly rolling to Worms.
There's some very nice gravel trails along the Rhein, and a huge icecream at the end helped to offset the heat of the day!
-
Saturday well-spent riding to Koblenz. 20°C, sunny, tailwind, good company - a splendid way to spend a Saturday. Highlights include very good icecream in Sankt Goar, and being there for my friend's first metric century, done on a Hercules city bike! She's strong 💪.

#CriticalMass is on tomorrow in #Mainz! Meeting at Fischtorplatz at 18.30. I'll be there :)
-
If you like ultra cycling, the indi-pac is kicking off this morning, from Freo to Sydney. I'll be dot watching over the next few weeks, and cheering on my mate Paul 🙌

Triptych - a very good Sunday. Teeshirt weather here today, which means getting out on the bike was appealing for the first time in a minute.

Endurance cycling fans will enjoy this full length doco about Lachlan Morton's record-setting lap around #Australia last year. I enjoyed dotwatching while he was out there, so good to see the film out! I'm watching it in sections, and it's great so far. It's quite beautifully shot, with lots of gorgeous Aussie scenes, which is healing my homesick little heart 💚

Got the chance to try a friend's recumbent this morning, and holy moly they're so weird! Fun, but terrifying.

No higher praise than when the mechanic says your bike is very nice 😍
New #VeloOrange fenders because I'm a sucker for nice bike stuff.
-
A case of the Mondays today, as the clip on my Ortlieb pannier broke, sucking the bag into the rear wheel 30 seconds after leaving home. On the bright side, I was close to home, the wheel is fine, and I didn't crash.
Ignore the mud, I need to buy some new fenders.

First ride out on the bouncy bike in Deutschland! I did not shred - or even find - the gnar, just checked out one of the local city forests. Doesn't matter though, it's impossible to have a bad time on this bike.
-
2 degrees here this morning, and I think my commuting strategy needs work. It felt like my eyeballs were freezing - a new one for me! As my brother in law reminded me - it's not even winter yet...

This year Red Bull Rampage included a women's category for the first time ever!
The biggest #MTB free-riding event in the world had been a men-only event for years (despite the women's talent pool being DEEP), but they finally caved. My Friday night entertainment is sorted!

I'm on a bike saddle journey at the moment, and after a few months of trying the selle Italia diva (absolutely does not work for me), I've been persuaded to join the Brooks cult, with a B17. So far I can report that I've never felt my sit bones so precisely 😅 hopefully in 400 km time it'll be the dream. Does look good though.

Great time at #CriticalMassMainz tonight.
There's just something about a big group of people on bikes engaging in some mild #CivilDisobedience. Immaculate vibes.

German free to air coverage ended just as they got to the start of Alpe d'Huez 🤦🏻♀️ thankfully it's streaming, too! Cmon Kasia!

Me: I should probably stop saying yes to service roles.
Also me: Oooooh, MPIC has a sustainability group! And they're having a bike workshop afternoon! I'M IN.
