I re-started this azolla/water spinach pond in a kiddie pool, and it seems to be going well.
I set these vanilla cuttings in the water, to keep them wet till I picked a spot for them. And it turns out they kind of like it! Who knew...

Bouncy azolla bucket. Bounce bounce bounce:

What an amazing plant! Happily creating a thick 3D mat on top of water. The mat is so thick that it holds raindrops and can be bounced without breaking it.

Nine days in fifteen seconds.
Note the signature of exponential growth: how much happens on the eight day. Bam!
So each day you take out as much as was clear on day eight, and the next day it is replaced.

Some azolla info from the Azolla Foundation:
> Why is azolla unique? ...because it is one of the fastest growing plants on the planet – yet it does not need any soil to grow. ...azolla is able to get its nitrogen fertilizer directly from the atmosphere. ...it is able to produce biofertilizer, livestock feed, food and biofuel

And I put a single bit of fern in tap water (untreated and not left out overnight to outgas chlorine or anything) to see how well it will grow.
#Azolla 🌱 ❤️

I've spread some out to see how it dries and how long it takes.

Two more trays of #azolla fern. Their color is different than the previous tray because they're under a grow light.
These trays are crowded too. I estimate that I have about four or five square meters if it was comfortable.

Here's one of the tubs of the azolla I got yesterday. It's pretty thickly covered. I just wanted to get the plants back in water after transport. I'll be spreading it out.

I levitated out of bed even before the cat woke up. It's fun to be excited about something. AZOLLA!!!

Tiny world: a single unit of azolla with one tiny water root. So cute!
Pic 3 shows how azolla grows & spreads in its tiny plastic-bowl pond. 💚
Azolla is an aquatic plant that grows on the surface of fresh water. Many pond-keepers are not fond of azolla because of how rapidly it grows & how quickly it can cover a whole pond. But azolla also makes an excellent (& fast-growing) green mulch & can be used as a supplement to farm animal diets.

@maeve Looks like #azolla to me. I've intentionally introduced it to my ponds, to feed the goldfish and add shade to keep the pond cool.
"Azolla (mosquito fern, duckweed fern, fairy moss, water fern) is a genus of seven species of aquatic ferns in the family Salviniaceae." https://duckduckgo.com/?q=azolla&atb=v375-1&iax=images&ia=images -

today's tiny ecosystem is a towering azolla forest that lives in a bucket of water.
azolla is an aquatic fern. on the #farm, it can be used as green mulch & as supplemental animal feed.
it can take over a pond, so i keep dedicated azolla buckets where it can form a 3D mat that can even climb the sides of the bucket!
it can multiply very quickly from even a few pieces. it seems to prefer shade.

#Azolla still remains the most serious proposal for climate change I have ever seen.

any #azolla enthusiasts out there? azolla are tiny aquatic ferns that can be used as green mulch, animal feed, & more.
they double in number extremely quickly, so can overtake a pond. we grow them in buckets & kiddie pools. they like shade & can happily share space w/water spinach.
the other day, i started a new azolla pond using just a handful of azolla from the orange bucket in pic 2. i arranged some ferns over it for shade. now it'll just go!
