  1. Today I got back to restoring a pair of vintage bookshelf speakers. The foam surrounds on the drivers had aged out. Crumbly foam... much better than if it went gooey. But I digress.

I'm at the stage where I'm cleaning off all the old foam and adhesive on the first driver. The gasket, unfortunately is likely not recoverable.

Since it's a cosmetic piece (it's there to provide support for another foam gasket that masks the mounting screws etc) I'm thinking I'll just design a 3d printable replacement and print in a softer material, like TPU.

We'll see how it goes. I've still got the other one of this pair to do, then I've got four more drivers to do on another pair of (massive) main speakers. If this works out for the gasket, then it'll save me time and money :)

Oh, kinda pleased to see that Made in Canada label on the driver as well as the branding badge on the grill.

  6. Made progress on two related projects last night. The first photo is a closeup of a vinyl record stylus that is attached to a moving coil cartridge mounted on a turntable I picked up at a garage sale in the fall. Cleaning and testing are next for it.

The speaker is part of a pair of nice '80s bookshelf speakers (also from that same garage sale) that I'm re-foaming. That stuff just doesn't last, and is sticky/messy.

Wow, with the CAD being so low right now, those foams are costing me a bit to ship from the States.

I have another re-foam project on the horizion but I'll wait and see how this one goes....
