"Lady in Red," József Rippl-Rónai, 1898.
Hungarian artist Rippl-Rónai (1861-1927) doesn't get remembered the way he should.
After being trained as a pharmacist, he decided to study art in Budapest, and in 1888 he won a grant to study in Paris, where he joined up with my beloved Nabis. Under their tutelage, he had his first successes as an artist, and their influence stayed with him.
He returned to Budapest, and while it took him a while to get some recognition, he eventually was a success and now most historians regard him as Hungary's first artistic modernist.
He was a believer that his entire life should be reflecting his art, even how he dressed, and later in life he became fascinated by interior design and stained glass...which makes sense with this image, which could be a stained-glass window. He also stuck to the Nabi idea that art shouldn't be afraid to simply be beautiful.

"Caesar at the Rubicon," Wilhelm Trübner, 1878.
Trübner (1851-1917) was a German Realist painter. Although never a major name (many of his paintings were too somber to really be popular) he did achieve a few humorous paintings with his dog, Caesar, that have endured.
He also did a lot to advance the idea of "art for art's sake," that is that a work of art should not just depict something beautiful, but be beautiful in and of itself, and that art should be free of utilitarian and didactic concerns. This was a reaction to a generation of artists who felt their art had to have a message and make a stand.
Eh...there's more than enough room for both, I say.

Hopefully it's safe here...
I have art to share and I want to help people understand that creating with your own hands can reshape the way you exist. To understand that creation does not need direction. It does not need forethought. Being purely present while creating, guided by nothing but movement and intuition, can change your world.
What I have to share is largely automatic drawings and film photographs.

What an interesting story about #RobertMartiensen creating art for the sake of it. It resonates. Most of my photography is unseen by others as I can’t be bothered with curation on sharing sites. Flickr, Unsplash and Glass just feel like work.
