  1. Art Pepper, Gettin’ Together, 1960 on Contemporary Records

Pepper joined here by Paul Chambers (bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums), Wynton Kelly (piano) and Conte Candoli (trumpet, on three tracks). That makes this another LP with Miles Davis' rhythm section, as the earlier Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section was. Rounding out for now my recent Art Pepper pickups (say Art Pepper Pickups five times fast), my copy—direct from Craft Recordings—is the 2024 Acoustic Sounds Series reissue mastered by Bernie Grundman and pressed at QRP.

  2. Art Pepper, Intensity, 1963 on Contemporary Records

Recorded in 1960 but released in 1963, this has Pepper joined by Dolo Coker (piano), Jimmy Bond (bass), and Frank Butler (drums). A critical part of any west coast jazz library. That cover photo makes me think of the moment in Lost in Translation where the translator turns a series of long directions in Japanese from the director to Bill Murray as an actor into just this: "more intensity." Part of a series of recent pickups from Pepper on reissues, my copy—direct from Craft […]

  3. Art Pepper + Eleven, “Modern Jazz Classics,” 1960 on Contemporary Records

Classic west coast jazz from Contemporary Records - sometimes just gets call Art Pepper + Eleven, sometimes Modern Jazz Classics. Not sure if 12 people counts as a big band - Wikipedia says "a small big band." Marty Paich did the arranging. Songs composed by Dizzy Gillespie, Horace Silver, Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, and Sonny Rollins among others. A must have for people (like me) who are fans of the west coast "cool jazz" and the late big band era. My copy—via private sale—is the […]

  4. Art Pepper wäre heute 100 Jahre alt geworden. So eines meiner Lieblingsalben "The Complete Abashiri Concert: November 22, 1981". Danke für zahlreiche herrliche Musikmomente.

  5. Art Pepper - An Afternoon in Norway - The Kongsberg Concert

Elemental and the Jazz Detective strike again!

Scandinavia, in general, had a ton of live shows that were broadcast, and their public stations preserved their tapes, which are typically in great condition.

This late-period (1980) Pepper show was a last second addition to their schedule, and they crushed it.

  7. Art Pepper - Gettin' Together

Not quite sure what the recording order of this and the other just-before-60s-prison LPs was. This is with very close to the "Meets the Rhythm Section" group, and in similar style as well.

Added to Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums), we’ve got Conte Candoli on trumpet.

  8. Art Pepper - Intensity

Pepper's career was pretty checkered, as he went in and out of prison and rehab, but his playing was always pretty stellar, and this 1960 session is no exception.

Here we've got Pepper on Alto, Jimmy Bond on bass, Frank Butler on drums, and Dolo Coker on piano.

It'd be 15 years before he'd lead another session.

Nice re-release/re-master/re-press by Craft and Analogue Productions.

  9. Art Pepper è uno dei grandi eredi di Charlie Parker ed un sassofonista tra i più originali e innovativi di sempre.

Ho trascritto e analizzato un suo brano originale intitolato "Lost Life".

  11. My favorite two paragraphs about jazz, ever. It’s the conclusion to Art Pepper’s autobiography, “Straight Life.”

  12. Chet Baker, Big Band, 1957 on Pacific Jazz

A ton of great musicians here, including Chet Baker but also: Norman Faye, Conte Candoli, Frank Rosolino, Art Pepper, Bud Shank, Bill Perkins, Phil Urso, Bobby Timmons, James Bond, Lawrence Marable, Bob Burgess, Bob Graf, Fred Waters, Bill Hood, Bobby Timmons, Peter Littman, Jame McKean. Produced by Richard Bock, the “chieff panjandrum” of Pacific Jazz Enterprises. Three of the tracks […]

  14. Art Pepper Quintet - “Smack Up”

Given Pepper's history, the title of this is either awfully revealing or awfully unfortunate.

But - really - a great set of six beautifully played tunes (all composed by saxophonists) by this quintet including Pepper (sax), Jack Sheldon (trumpet), Pete Jolly (piano), Jimmy Bond (bass) and Frank Butler (drums), given a lovely remaster/recut by Bernie Grundman and a flat, silent pressing by QRP.
