I got bored of trying to make AppleTalk sing and dance on Windows NT and 2000 so I switched to an OS with a good native implementation: IRIX. :sgi:

I've been messing around with AppleTalk on Windows 2000 via C and C++, two languages I'm just not proficient in and not super enthused about learning. I was considering doing this in Rust, a language I am more enthusiastic about. Just to make sure I wasn't reinventing a wheel, I did a little search for doing cross-platform AppleTalk with Rust and someone published a WIP project *yesterday* that does exactly this!
https://github.com/FeralFirmware/TailTalk
My goal, I think, is to be able to write most of this on Linux and cross-compile for Win32

@vga256 @byteknight Indisnt even know you could access a BBS via #appletalk. How do I accomplish this given I have multiple Macs on #globaltalk ?

@mroach @kalleboo I managed to bring up a Microsoft Mail 3.0 server in the Digitopolis zone. The server is a faceless background extension; all configuration happens in the client by logging into the magic "Network Manager" account with a magic default password (which I changed, obviously.) When new mail comes in, you get a big notification alert.

While reading MSDN Library 2001 I came across mention that Exchange Server 5.5 supports AppleTalk.
I setup Exchange 5.5 and tried to find some version of MIcrosoft Mail for Macintosh that would work and/or do something, but ended up destroying my MacOS 9.2 virtual machine instead.
I just wanted to bring enterprise-grade mail services to the network :[

I found documentation for AppleTalk on Windows 2000 to be a bit scattered and there are some gotchas along the way, so I documented my findings so far.
Once I figure out the guest file access issue on 2000, I'll have found feature parity between it and NT 4.

Making some progress here getting Windows 2000 and SQL Server 200 onto AppleTalk and eventually GlobalTalk thanks to jrouter.
This is new and exciting networking activity.

A pair of neat #AppleTalk posters are up on Mercari, a shame they want $70 each(!!) for them

My final project for #MARCHintosh 2025. Sitting on the couch downloading an app to my #Newton #eMate over wifi from my workshop server that is 5 miles away on a different zone on #globaltalk.
Seems simple by today’s standards but that took a lot of retro tech to make it happen.
2x LC475 (AIR routers)
1x Original Airport Basestation
1x clamshell iBook to setup BS
1x rebuilt eMate battery plus eMate hinge repair
1x PCMCIA wifi card that would support #appletalkThat is a Mic drop for me.

Finally joined the #globaltalk today! A gopher log entry is forthcoming, but this moment was many-fails-in-the-making… hard drives, power supplies, ink cartridges… Feels great to enjoy classic #AppleTalk networking with friends again. :) Happy #MARCHintosh, all!

Mind you, my main contribution in that era was one of the earliest "online" travel applications written for internal Apple use. I'd argue it's still easier to use than anything on the web. We basically fronted SABRE with a full Mac OS experience. #appletalk #globaltalk

With all the people playing with #appletalk and #globaltalk, I'm reminded of when I worked for Apple in the early 1990s, in the "pre IP" days when we ran a global AppleTalk network where you could mount a file server from Cupertino in London. Slowly.
It was a time.
-
Wow. I watch people having fun exploring #GlobalTalk and, as someone who had to work with #AppleTalk professionally for years, all I can think is, "Brrr… Too soon, man. Too soon."

"#AppleTalk is a local area network (LAN) that can tie up to 32 Macs or peripherals together... Few offices need to push the network to its limits, which is just as well, because all AppleTalk can realistically handle is between 8 and 10 nodes."

I've finished writing up the guide for building QEMU version 9 on a Raspberry Pi 5 along with the scripts to enable bridged networking for AppleTalk over Ethernet. The guide covers both 68K and PPC Mac emulation.
Hope you find it useful!
