  1. interested in any tips on how to get the IIci connected to Netatalk..

im on System 7.5.3 and using BlueSCSI's DaynaPort emulation with Open Transport 1.3. my router is a GL-iNet Flint2 with OpenWRT, which is supposed to handle AppleTalk over wifi.

my AFP share shows up in Chooser, but when trying to log in i just get this error (the credentials are correct, there is a different error if i mistype them) #MARCHintosh #Netatalk #BlueSCSI

  2. #Netatalk experts: any idea why, as of late, my AFP #GlobalTalk shares have been showing up with generic document icons on Mac OS 7.x? But the icons look just fine on Mac OS 9?

This started happening around the time I migrated my shares from my NAS over to a Raspberry Pi, and upgraded to Netatalk 4.3.2.

I've confirmed that the share folder permissions are the same on both systems, as well as the permissions on the hidden “.Icon$\r” files at the root of the shares. However the Finder does not allow me to change the icons via the Get Info screen (on both Mac OS 7 and 9), which seems to imply that there _is_ a permissions issue of some kind. Yet, folks can read and write to the shares just fine.

I tried deleting the hidden icon files, which made no difference (other than causing the default Netatalk icon to show on Mac OS 9, since I removed the custom icon). Changing the "legacy icon" option in the Netatalk config also makes no difference, other than making a different Netatalk icon show on Mac OS 9.

  3. Ok, so this centipede printer workflow isn’t really reliable so I dove into CUPS to try and see if there’s a way to alter the dithering.

I tried adding different settings to the PPD file but nothing produced any changes.

Until I added “DitherPPI” (a GS option) and it produced a result that was pretty good! I tried various values (30, 80, 120, 180) but they all looked identical. In any case, this is good enough for me!

  4. The way it works is this:

    1. A print is initiated from a device to the CUPS-PDF driver on my #netatalk Raspberry Pi.
    2. The resulting PDF is placed in the AFP share of netatalk/afpd.
    3. An emulated PPC Mac 9.2.2 running the #AppleScript below is watching for new files in that folder and will print them using Acrobat Reader to the #ImageWriterII via #LocalTalk using the MacPalette II driver.

It works, but crashes with dialog that I can't auto-dismiss.

  5. My #GlobalTalk setup has now moved to a Proxmox VM (Devuan Linux), so it won't interfere with my other stuff on my home server.
I now have a #netatalk server for file sharing and the #GlobalTalk router in a qemu m68k "VM".
It runs fine, thank you to all GlobalTalk people who make this possible!
In the next days, I will explore the GlobalTalk world from my #Performa 475, which is now running fine with MacOS 7.6.1 on a #BlueSCSI v2 and an Asante Ethernet card :)
