  1. For years I've defended #roku as the "least enshittified" video device. Well, they've finally joined the club.

    Fuck you, Roku. Fuck you.

Thanks for adding a ton of crap I don't use to my home screen and removing my ability to customize it to my liking.

You're as awful as #chromecast now. Worse, because you used to be better.

    smh

  6. We talk a lot about various terms on the #Fediverse, #WebSocial, what have you - but the fact is that it becomes noise to the average person.

#developers may complain about "#appification", or the concept that the user is not supposed to be apprised of the internal mechanisms of a platform, but the fact is the user sees an app - and that's pretty much it.

An operation in #Wales made it pretty clear: your platform should have it's own "app" - or client.

  11. I would mark this up in the realm of #enshittification which is #Appification of life. I work in library where we support people with what I call low level tech issues. But the appification of life is so bad that people are so used to go to google is to open the google app. so when they open Chrome and it loads our library website, they are already lost on how to go to google. Since the search bar is already google, they will literally google 'google' to get to google. Sadly IT Crowd was wrong

    OK: context

First web site using the pico text editor remotely over telnet to one of those home-brew [isp_domain]/user/~[account_name] web sites in 1994

(If you understand what that refers to, you know where I'm coming from)

#Doctorow ought to rework his #Enshitification schtick into a 2020's relevant #Appification hot take

Absolutely no one understands either what the Internet is or how it works any more

    No one

The entire Internet has been reduced to dozens of "apps" on people's phones

Multiple apps for food, travel, banking, money exchange, health care, shopping

And all of it is sucking off Personally-Identifiable Information into each app vendor, completely unknown to an ignorant, credulous public

  19. why are people all talking about #enshitification when people should also be talking about #appification of websites, where they are not really trying to be websites, but apps instead. And then along comes ElectronJS.
