A #photograph of the #BridgeofLions in #StAugustine, #Florida, which #bridges the #MatanzasRiver and #IntraCoastalWaterway to #AnastasiaIsland. The #bridge was intended to be as much a work of #art as a #utilitarian object. To grace the entrance of the bridge, prominent local citizen Dr. Andrew #Anderson commissioned the #RomanelliStudios of #Florence, #Italy to recreate the famous #MediciLion #statues in the #RoyalPalace in #Madrid, #Spain. These incredible #artworks eventually gave the bridge its name.

The #Florida communities of St Augustine and Anastasia Island are linked across the #Matanzas River, part of the #Intracoastal #Waterway, by the “Bridge of Lions,” a concrete #bridge styled to also be a work of #art, and crowned with the gift of two marble lion sculptures.
Since #ship traffic passes through the vital #IntracoastalWaterway, the bridge rises to permit tall boats through. Many #sailboats and #yachts are either waiting to cross or are anchored in the river.

A #Photograph of one of the two #Marble #Lions that stand outside the bridge from St Augustine to #Anastasia #Island in #Florida, gifted by local Dr. Andrew Anderson, and styled after the “Medici Lions” in the Royal Palace in Madrid.
They were carved in Florence, Italy and meant to grace a bridge that was to be as much artistic as functional between the two communities, giving it the nickname “Bridge of Lions.”

The #MarbleLions were a gift to the city from wealthy local Dr. Andrew Anderson, who commission Florentine sculptors to work #ItalianMarble into copies of the famous #Medici Lions in the Royal Palace in Madrid.
The lions became such an integral part of the bridge in the mind of locals that it became known as the Bridge of Lions.

The bridge had to be restored in 2006, and the #lions were removed for their protection, and replaced in 2011.
