@wouldinotcallmyselfahumanbeing @sz_duras The reason competition between firms is necessary is because there is no way to enforce the firms doing a good job without having other people working on similar projects to compare to. It also prevents mismanagement.
I also think you’re straw manning pro-capitalists. Most centrists support capitalism on #utilitarian or individual rights based grounds. These ethics aren’t rooted in flawed analogies to Darwinian evolution.

I probably will get a bike as sort of a consolation prize from intern stint - maybe comp al, maybe axum, maybe haro - they will all need some mods but all decent and way better than what i am tooling around on currently, need to save up for a 3/4 ton, i had several pu trucks they are great but if you do side jobs get hd model - may be a bit safer as well #utilitarian #capacity #toys vs tools

Proud to share two new papers from the lab last week, reflecting the two senses of the term #neuroethics :

The first, led by Tobias Haeusermann, addresses ethical considerations in rapid and novel treatments in #psychiatry, such as #psychedelics, #ketamine, and #neuromodulatory technologies. This overview focuses on 3 specific domains of ethical concern: informed consent, the role of expectancy in clinical response, and distributive justice.

The second, led by Rea Antoniou, empirically explores two contrasting models of #utilitarian moral reasoning: a "dual-process model" based on an emotion/cognition contrast, and a "two-dimensional model" (yes, I know) suggesting dissociable components within utilitarian judgment. We found support for elements of both models, and interpret these findings in terms of a modified synthesis of both models:

I identify as a #consequentialist and a (negative) #utilitarian, I suspect that existence is probably not worth it because of the asymmetry of #qualia, and yet I have no intention of ending my own life (and I think that’s rational). Why?
When we’re #children we don’t really understand what suffering is, and we don’t even know that living is a choice. So we live.
#Teens and young adults famously tend to get closer to one of two poles: either they’re disappointed, miserable, or lost (some of those do end their lives), or they are having a great time: they’re at their prime, disease and pain are unknown to them, they discover pleasures, etc (those are happy to live).
We #adults are usually so entangled in relationships by this stage of life that even if/when we decided that non-existence beat existence for us, we wouldn’t want to cause more suffering to those who love us and those who depend on us. So we (usually) live.

This depresses me somewhat - that we’ve known our #economy and even our survival depends on the state of the environment, but we’re still subsidizing #oil and #mining companies like they’re a public good. Using their 2nd #language also led to more #utilitarian #moral decisions and arguments—an effect mediated by using (fewer) high-arousal words.
