#Caesar did not actively defend Catiline.
While he had previously supported Catiline, he later distanced himself.
When accused of involvement, Caesar pointed to Cicero’s testimony that he had informed against Catiline.
Overall, Caesar maintained a cautious stance to avoid implicating himself in the #conspiracy.

Because the story of #Catiline is batshit, just like that of the #AmericanCatiline.

Normalize putting “#conservative” in quotes.
They don’t want to “conserve” anything, especially the #American Republic™
They are #reactionaries.
They want to Make Sulla’s #Proscriptions Great Again.
Hear me now, believe me later.
You: “So dramatic, they could never do that or get away with it”
Me: “Okay, boss, sure boss, whatever, boss”

I don’t disagree, but I think the more accurate frame isn’t the Putsch.
It’s #Catiline, whom the founders obsessed about, as a character from history that threatened the model of the Republic which they were aspiring toward.
The #AmericanCatiline still lives.

Who is the modern day #Cicero to read out loud the #Catilinarian Orations?

The idea is to bring back proscriptions, killing people for their property and assets.
It’s not even a new playbook: Marius and Sulla already did this during the end of the #RomanRepublic
