  2. for those ready for next year's class, the language setting for your toots actually matters for accessibility!

it's not just helpful for those of us an instances with a translation feature

see, my screenreader has a voice for both french and english because i read a lot of content in those two languages

so my screen reader attempts to read anything tagged as english with the english voice and anything tagged as french with the french voice

if things are tagged not as either, it informs me and doesn't attempt to butcher it!

but the synthesizers for French and English are ridiculous when swapped, worse than a bad stereotype movie accent - to the point that sometimes i can't understand the text at all

so yeah! try to make sure your language is tagged correctly. this is true in your web design as well and a huge thing i often see missed! if you have any level of multi-language text in an HTML file make sure that's tagged.

    this is all!

  3. This is an incredibly common #accessibility failure in WordPress themes and plugins. If your website has smooth scroll, do this quick 10-second check to ensure it's not breaking the accessibility of your skip and anchor links.

Making the case for capitalization: remember that blind and low vision people use social media via text-to-speech, so:

    #CamelCase #PascalCase #AccessibilityTip

  9. @kepler Also as someone reminded me, use #PascalCase or #camelCase for hashtags, because it makes it more clear for screen readers. #AccessibilityTip

  10. @markwyner
Interesting..I like to use camel case hashtags to be more human readable... #AccessibilityTip #Acessiibilidade

  11. Alt-text should convey to blind and low vision people who use text-to-speech, the same information a sighted person gets from the image. One doesn't have to describe every line or color shade, but at least the essence of what's on the image.

A useful exercise: how you'd describe something you see to a friend who isn't right next to you.

  12. @BasicIncomeEarth gentle reminder: Please add #AltText

You can follow a bot like @alt_text or @PleaseCaption to remind you to caption your images.

When writing alt text for images, many times less is more.

Take the context of your post into account so that you can be accurate and concise with your description.

Remember, non-sighted users will need to listen to your entire text description.

  14. I have “Hey Siri” enabled on my phone, but not my laptop. Sometimes I miss it on the laptop, as Siri can be a quicker interface than using an app directly, setting a reminder for instance.

Just discovered you can enable “Type to Siri” in macOS Accessibility settings, so now I hold ⌘-space then type “remind me in 10 minutes to get coffee”, enter, then “bye” and Siri sets the reminder and vanishes without me having to speak or move the mouse. Neat!

  15. Today I learned that the Metatext app has a ‘detect text’ function that pastes text into the screen reader when you share an image of a page of text. Hurray! #MetatextApp #AccessibilityTip

  16. Just a gentle reminder to put your hashtags at the end of your posts and to capitalize them. This will make it a nicer experience for those using screen readers.
