Danielle Smith doesn't want to turn off O&G so I figure I better do my damnedest to go net-zero myself and encourage those around me to do the same.
She might not have a plan but if the rest of us do our best to reduce O&G consumption, what's she gonna do? 🤷♂️
I think I'm going to draft up letters to her for every single day. She's going to get real sick of me. 😉

How are you feeling about Alberta's provincial election?
If you're one of these people who says you're going to leave Alberta because of the election results, where will you go?
I'm gutted and profoundly discouraged. I'm keeping an eye open at housing in BC but have also just started the process of getting solar panels installed so I guess probably sticking around for awhile.

@robsonfletcher can you really say they won 52.6% of the popular vote? If the popular vote is defined as actual voters, then yes. But in reality, it was more like 32% of eligible voters (based on actual UCP votes compare to all eligible voters).

- Half of Smith's cabinet was defeated

- The first black woman was elected (Rhiannon Hoyle)
- The first First Nations woman was elected (Jodi Calahoo-Stonehouse)

I don't have a lot of thoughts about the #ABElxn yet, I'm not ready to think that much about it.
Instead, I'm both excited and anxious for my first #BikePacking trip! Heading out from #yeg to #ElkIsland NP first thing in the morning, staying two nights at Oster Lake.
Will post a photo of my rig once I've got it all packed!

@ihawkins While we are voting for individuals, there's still a vast majority who vote for the party regardless of who's running in their riding... not saying Elections Alberta could do better but in the end, I don't think it really matters.

@marius_gs @IPEdmonton Actually, that ~52% is of ~62% actual voters (out of eligible) which is only ~32% of eligible voters who determined the path for the next four years for all of Alberta.

@ThisIsWillAdams Also, when it comes down to it, only 32.6% of eligible voters voted for the UCP (926,918 UCP voters/2,840,927 eligible) - even though 60%+ of eligible voters voted. So, 1/3rd of eligible voters dictated the next four years of Alberta politics...

Roughly 1.7 million people cast ballots in the election, according to Elections Alberta’s preliminary results, with voter turnout dropping to 62 per cent compared with 67.5 per cent in 2019.". So, down a bit but way more than half voted. (#Ontario turnout was just 43% in 2022 #onelxn)

@GuitarKat @dabertime In Calgary-Cross, Calgary-East there was a bigger difference in votes than Greens had. In Calgary-Bow and Calgary North-West, Alberta Party did have more than the diff so it only affected two seats.

@xenu gawd, I saw a voter interviewed last night saying he was a small business owner (which, if NDP had won last night, he would have had 0% small business tax) and voted UCP because last NDP term his business suffered (even though we were under a recession and the price of oil had tanked).

@jace well I mean a good chunk of rural Alberta burned due to the UCP killing off the elite wildfire unit and reducing funding for wildfire prevention/fighting... and they still voted UCP.

WTF, last time I checked the average citizen isn't a financial advisor: "Bill 1 for a second UCP term, dubbed the 'Taxpayer Protection Act,' would ensure no provincial government can increase personal or business taxes without a referendum."

With the election results in Alberta we have to again have a serious chat about the illusion of choice on the left. The NDP, Liberals and Green Parties at the provincial and federal level genuinely need to talk about why a majority of left leaning voters keep getting defeated in elections by a smaller, consolidated Conservative voting block. Everywhere in this country there are more left leaning votes than right, but the left can’t get over themselves.
