Steely Dan, Pretzel Logic, 1974 on ABC Records
Third Steely Dan studio LP out in 1974 on ABC Records and the last to include the full quintet: Walter Becker, Donald Fagen, Denny Dias, Jim Hodder, and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter - plus studio musicians. "Ricky Don't Lose That Number" may have become their most well known song over time, though I love "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" and the title track. My copy—via private sale—is a 1974 Santa Maria pressing. with the inside gatefold that actually works vertically (if you're reading on […]https://goatless.org/2026/07/31/steely-dan-pretzel-logic-1974-on-abc-records

Steely Dan, The Royal Scam, 1976 on ABC
Fifth studio album from Donald Fagen, Walter Becker et. al., produced by Gary Katz. Steely Dan can be a bit divisive, and gets dismissed sometimes as "Dad rock" but I really appreciate the songwriting and musicianship of all these records. The Royal Scam includes "Kid Charlemagne" and "Haitian Divorce." My copy —via Mystery Train Records in Gloucester MA—is a Santa Maria pressing with the multicolored ABC labels.https://goatless.org/2026/06/21/steely-dan-the-royal-scam-1976-on-abc

"What a Wonderful World" is a song written by #BobThiele (as "George Douglas") and #GeorgeDavidWeiss. It was first recorded by #LouisArmstrong on August 16, 1967. In April 1968, it topped the #popChartInTheUnitedKingdom, but performed poorly in the United States because #LarryNewton, the president of #ABCRecords, disliked the song and refused to promote it. After it was heard in the film #GoodMorningVietnam, it was reissued as a single in 1988.

Steely Dan, Katy Lied, 1975 on ABC Records
Walter Becker and Donald Fagen on the fourth full length studio album from Steely Dan. This was the first album after the departure of Skunk Baxter and Jim Hodder and the shift into studio albums with session musicians. (One of the session musicians here is Michael MacDonald providing backing vocals.)
Apparently Becker and Fagen were unhappy with the sound for some technical reasons but it […]
