Every year on March 9, hip-hop fans around the world pause to celebrate the life, music, and cultural impact of The Notorious B.I.G., widely known as Biggie Smalls. Born Christopher Wallace in Brooklyn, New York, Biggie became one of the most influential rappers of all time, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape music, storytelling, and culture decades after his passing.
For fans across the country—including right here in Raleigh and the Triangle—the music of Biggie Smalls remains timeless. His voice, lyricism, and ability to paint vivid pictures of life in New York City transformed hip-hop and helped define an era.
From Brooklyn to Hip-Hop Royalty
Born on May 21, 1972, in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Christopher Wallace grew up surrounded by the sounds and struggles of New York City street life. Through storytelling, rhythm, and unmatched lyrical flow, he turned those experiences into unforgettable music.
Biggie’s career skyrocketed after being discovered by Sean “Diddy” Combs, who signed him to Bad Boy Records in the early 1990s.
His debut album, Ready to Die, released in 1994, quickly became a classic. The album included legendary tracks like:

These songs showcased Biggie’s charisma, storytelling ability, and smooth flow, establishing him as one of the greatest lyricists hip-hop had ever seen.
A Lasting Impact on Hip-Hop Culture
Biggie’s music helped redefine East Coast hip-hop during the 1990s and played a major role in the genre’s mainstream rise. His second album, Life After Death, was released just weeks after his tragic passing in March 1997.

March 9 has become an unofficial global celebration of Biggie’s life, often referred to by fans as “Biggie Day.” Across cities and communities—from Brooklyn to Raleigh—fans celebrate by playing his music, sharing memories, and honoring one of hip-hop’s greatest storytellers.
