@xanderl - this is the kind of online film content I love to find. I have Haunters Of The Deep so may well plan that double-bill when Enys Men is available for home viewing.

#AtentuPriElektro #AtentuPriAkvo

@richardjfoster @xanderl I made a 'joke' about handing a cabbage to a 20-year-old friend of mine when he dropped one of the large amount of things he was trying to carry.
Oh, the silence.
I might as well have made a joke referencing the Crimean War. #SoOld

This was Ousmane Sembene's first feature - last year we discussed his second, Mandabi, which is also great (but very different to this one)
"Black Girl" is a very short film (only 60 minutes) but packs a real punch. It's one of only 2 African films on the latest BFI 100 Greatest Films list.
Our discussion of Sembene's "Mandabi" is here -

Our latest podcast discusses Ousmane Sembene's "Black Girl" ("La Noire de ...") (1966)
A young woman from Senegal arrives in France, expecting to be working as a Nanny for a white French couple - instead she finds she's actually working as a domestic servant and becomes increasingly alienated. Meanwhile the white couple are blissfully unaware of any problems and see nothing wrong with their behaviour.

@stovesses @SaltiredPopcorn Enys Men will be on BFI Player - not sure if it will be a rental or part of the subscription, or if it will be an exclusive. They also have "Haunters of the Deep" at the moment as part of a collection curated by Mark Jenkin - good on him for being open about the influence!
-
Fascinating watching Children's Film Foundation film "Haunters of the Deep" (1984) as a double bill with Enys Men. It's filmed on some of the same locations - as Mark Jenkin says "Having recently re-watched it, I realise I may have borrowed some shots for my film. It obviously made a mark"

Interesting archive TV repeat on Talking Pictures TV in the UK tonight - "The Wimbledon Poisoner" from 1994 starring Robert Lindsay and Alison Steadman. As far as I can see its not been repeated by the BBC since the mid-90s. In two parts, today and tomorrow.

"Fanny Cradock, BBC Television Centre, Wood Lane, W12" (1975) director Chantal Akerman

Great charity shop find - the novel of 1975 kids drama “Striker” by Kenneth Cope (yes, that one) - if I recall correctly another example of pre-Grange Hill gritty drama for children.
The lead character lived in a caravan with his Dad, who I seem to remember was a former professional footballer who lost his career through injury.

1985: Roland from Grange Hill and his French girlfriend Francine go to see a Chantal Akerman film with no subtitles
2022: Chantal Akerman tops the Sight And Sound poll
Coincidence? I don't think so!

My new favourite #GrangeHill character - I wish we'd seen more of Imelda Davis' brassy, belligerent, chain-smoking mother in her fabulous burgundy leather jacket, blue leather trousers and yellow stilettos. Iconic!
Sadly she only appears in a single episode, in which Imelda is expelled.

Good news for people in the UK - the whole of The Sarah Jane Adventures is available on iPlayer, for "over a year".
It's the only one of the post-2005 Doctor Who related series that wasn't previously on there - I believe because the cost would have come out of the CBBC budget.

Sadly Michael Staniforth (Timothy Claypole) died in 1987 (5 years after this episode) aged 44 of an AIDS-related illness

Top fact - Mrs Meaker is played by Ann Emery, whose brother was Dick Emery.
And I knew that Mr Meaker lookalike tailors dummy would lead to some hilarious consequences!

"Rentaghost" on BBC4 shortly.
I met Edward Brayshaw (Mr Meaker) in the late 80s. He claimed that in series 1 the Meakers had a baby called Nigel who was turned into a pork chop and never mentioned again. If the cast wanted to annoy Bob Block in later years they would ask him "Whatever happened to Baby Nigel?"
This was almost true I discovered later - Nigel did exist, was turned into a dog although was turned back, but he did vanish!

For more information on the complete technological dead end that was the BBC's 3D TV week, here's the Tomorrow's World feature on how it worked. Basically it was 3D, as long as people wandered around in circles.
-
An even odder Sparks / Crackerjack crossover than was seen on the episode BBC4 repeated at the weekend - here's Peter Glaze and Don Maclean doing "Something for the Girl With Everything" from "Propaganda"

When they did the radio station storyline in series 10 of Grange Hill, decorating the studio with posters of Radio 1 DJs probably seemed like a good idea at the time

A fabulous photo to start Monday - Richard Briers presenting the prize in a fancy dress competition to a child dressed as The Yellow Pages.
This 3 year old was no fool as presumably he knew Briers was at that point the voice of Busby in the British Telecom ads.
"He not only handed prizes to the winners at Milton-under-Wychwood but gave £1 notes from his own pocket to others he thought deserved recognition."

So to finish off this baffling, chaotic show, the Black Knight turns up. He is called Nigel so of course they all join in with a rousing rendition of "Making Plans for Nigel" by XTC.
This show ran for 29 years from 1955 to 1984 on the BBC, and was revived a couple of years ago! I used to watch it every week as a kid.
