How about photos that are not rocks today? Ha! Got a 3-pack of classic Cracker Jacks yesterday. I have no idea why we kids thought they are great. And the “toy” in each box is now just a sticker and. You are supposed to go online now to play a game. Which are “classic arcade games” with pinball controls. Which are not working today. 😭

Also, 1 oz of product is really a small amount. And the cardboard box is still printed slightly offset so it kind of is jarring if you’re the type who looks really close at the boy and the dog.

I was also worried about the product when I read “enlarged to show texture”. Could popcorn and peanuts have become a lot smaller? Well, spoiler, it IS smaller but more in terms of quantity. And in the 120 years of production people are now used to agricultural advances that produce larger popped kernels we find in kettle corn or Boom Chicka Pop or Naked Popcorn. Your memories to add?

Maïs soufflé au caramel

Il est impossible de résister à ce maïs soufflé au caramel qui recrée la magie des Cracker Jack. La légèreté du maïs soufflé se marie avec bonheur au caramel craquant dans une explosion de saveur sucrée-salée. Cette recette ne contient pas de sirop de maïs. C’est la mélasse qui lui donne son goût distinctif en plus de lui apporter certains micronutriments : vitamine B, calcium, potassium, fer et cuivre. La mélasse verte, dite Blackstrap, a une saveur et une couleur plus prononcées que celles de la mélasse de fantaisie, et sa valeur nutritive est légèrement plus intéressante. Cette recette, inspirée de celle du New York Times, vous donnera environ 16 tasses de maïs soufflé au caramel.

Ingrédients

• 2 c. à soupe d’huile d’arachide, de pépins de raisin ou de canola
• ½ à ¾ de tasse de maïs à éclater
• 1 tasse d’arachides salées (facultatif)
• 1 c. à thé d’extrait de vanille
• ¼ de c. à thé de bicarbonate de soude
• ½ tasse de beurre non salé, coupé en morceaux
• 1 tasse de cassonade bien tassée
• ¼ de tasse de mélasse
• sel ou fleur de sel au goût

Préparation

• Préchauffez le four à 250 °F et couvrez deux grandes plaques à biscuit de papier parchemin.
• Dans une grande casserole à fond épais, chauffer l’huile à feu moyen. Déposez quelques grains de maïs au fond de la casserole, couvrez et attendez que les grains éclatent. Lorsque vous entendez les premiers grains éclater, ajoutez le reste du maïs et couvrez. Secouez la casserole de temps en temps, pendant que le maïs éclate (environ 4-6 minutes). Lorsque les éclats ralentissent et que quelques secondes de silence séparent les éclats, retirez du feu.
• Transférez le maïs soufflé dans un très grand bol résistant à la chaleur en prenant soin de jeter les grains non éclatés. Ajoutez les arachides si désiré. Placez la vanille et le bicarbonate de soude près de la cuisinière pour les avoir à portée de main.
• Dans une petite casserole, mélangez le beurre non salé, la cassonade, la mélasse et le sel à feu moyen jusqu’à ce que le beurre fonde. Une fois le beurre fondu, fixez un thermomètre à bonbons sur le côté de la casserole et laissez cuire le mélange, sans le remuer, jusqu’à ce que la température atteigne 248 °F.
• Retirez du feu et ajoutez immédiatement la vanille et le bicarbonate de soude. Le mélange va mousser. Versez-le immédiatement sur le maïs soufflé et utilisez une cuillère en bois pour enrober le maïs uniformément.
• Répartissez le maïs soufflé sur les deux plaques à biscuit. Enfournez-le jusqu’à ce que le mélange soit sec, en remuant de temps en temps (environ 20 à 25 minutes). Le mélange peut encore être légèrement collant, il va durcir en refroidissant. Saupoudrez un peu de sel.
• Laissez le maïs soufflé refroidir complètement. Il est préférable de le déguster le jour même, mais vous pouvez le conserver dans un récipient hermétique jusqu’à 3 jours.

1993 Cracker Jack #7 Grover Cleveland Alexander

I love these little things. The 24-card set celebrates Cracker Jack's 100th anniversary.

And apparently I didn't eat too many Cracker Jacks because I only have about five, and I can't remember better toys on the boxes (remind me if I'm wrong)

The cards seem to have slight grease stains, which I didn't notice until the pandemic years.

Don't remember how I got this one as I bought/got zero cards in 1991 and somehow is the year that I have the most cards of.

I bought these basically because somewhere a bigot who just remembered that #CrackerJack exists is apoplectic for one or more reasons over these, and I'm more than happy to override their dollar's vote with my own.

For those too young (spits) or outside of the UK Crackerjack was a kid's Friday teatime show with games, sketches, *comedy". They often tried to insert music from the pop charts of the day into their sketches. For a young fledgling Bowie fan this one hurt bad. Warning the cringe factor is stratospheric.

So to finish off this baffling, chaotic show, the Black Knight turns up. He is called Nigel so of course they all join in with a rousing rendition of "Making Plans for Nigel" by XTC.

This show ran for 29 years from 1955 to 1984 on the BBC, and was revived a couple of years ago! I used to watch it every week as a kid.
