Starting February 10, 2027, Let’s Encrypt will issue certificates with a 64-day default validity, down from 90 days, ahead of the CA/Browser Forum’s 45-day switch. The last 90-day certificates are expected to expire in May 2027, and no valid certificates will be revoked during the transition. securityweek.com/lets-encrypt-

  4. Let's Encrypt will shorten default certificate lifetime from 90 to 64 days for certificates issued from February 10, 2027. The move reduces the window for key misuse and revocation delays while requiring fully automated renewal. Operators should audit ACME clients and monitoring now.

  5. Setting up is not a user-friendly experience & is a perfect example of how user unfriendly linux can be. Or should I say non idiot-proof? It does not echo the . There is no way to make it do so. So how is one supposed to deal with the case that the keyboard is different to what the computer is set as? Then you type in your passphrase twice blindly & then later wonder what happened as what you thought was a - or y was something else and boom lockout. Terrible design.

It works with Certbot, Caddy (without the '=' sign at the end of HMAC), acme.sh and soon also with nginx-acme module (PR pending).

Oh, right, what about ZeroSSL 🇦🇹, you ask? They're based in Austria but the company is owned by HID Global 🇺🇸, which is owned by ASSA ABLOY 🇸🇪.

And they're not very dependable, throws errors all the time and stuff.

  19. Silent Ransom Group Allegedly Extorted $207 Million Without Encrypting Files

The Silent Ransom Group allegedly extorted $207 million from 27 law firms in six months using phone calls and social engineering, not encryption. The group deploys no malware payload and locks no files, relying instead on pressure tactics aimed almost entirely at law firms. The case is the latest example of pure-extortion ransomware replacing encryption. securityaffairs.com/200719/cyb

  23. Anyone remember WEP, the original encryption scheme for WiFi?

"W" did not stand for "WiFi" or "Wireless".
"E" did not stand for "Encryption".
"P" did not stand for "Protocol".

The acronym was actually "Wired Equivalent Privacy", which, given how badly broken it was, is hilarious.

  24. So in my experience getting onto my Macbook 2015 ended up without any encryption on the local disk. Performance with LVM was abyssmal. Installing with ZFS on root left me with an unusable system. Something about the way debbootstrap installed during the instructions left me with a version of Linux that could not access the Apple USB devices. It would boot and the kernel would throw a bunch of USB device errors, and it wouldn't recogize the built-in keyboard, so I couldn't even login.

A standard Debian install works fine.

So is running just fine. But this is a slow machine. I discovered a tool called eatmydata. It basically shims calls to fsync() system calls and does a no-op instead. (😱) What could possibly go wrong?

But running sudo eatmydata apt install blah blah blah runs way faster than the equivalent apt command.

It has breathed new life into this laptop.
