I don't like #AI. I think it's problematic in a lot of ways, that I won't repeat here as I believe you heard these (very much true) arguments 100 times.

But #DuckAI helped me quite a lot yesterday, and I don't know how to feel about that. By curiosity, I made it write #elisp code to create new useful commands for #emacs which will help me in my everyday work (for example `C-c m` now creates a PDF using `pdfmom -k` so I don't have to use a terminal at the same time when I use #groff, `C-c t` adds `/|` before some punctuations signs following French typographic rules, …). These functions are very simple, most of you here could have written them by hand in less time than it took me to write the prompts, but I'm no developer, and don't have the time to become one, unfortunately. They work as intended (I can control that as, again, they're simple things), and I more or less understand them, as the #LLM described them. I even asked it questions to understand some parts of the code, and it answered (correctly it seems; I checked and as far as I can know, its answers seem legit), so I was able to modify them by hand to fine-tune them. One was wrong, but when I sent it the error message, it corrected it and explained the error to me.

It didn't feel like I was relinquishing brain power; in the contrary I learnt things. I could have done that by hand, and I would have learnt far more, but it would have taken months and I don't have months: a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

I still think that LLMs are a problem for our societies, but even more so than I thought as it seems to be actually useful in some cases.

Okay, so I just wanted to figure out how to pad a video to a certain length with black frames so I can avoid getting spoiled when watching the downloaded broadcast of #StarCraft games on my TV by the length of the video.

I typed in my question to duckduckgo, there is no easy #ffmpeg switch that does it, there is no universal solution on stack overflow, but #DuckAi gave me a Bash script that almost worked instantly, and one that worked in like 20 minutes.

But I also feel dumber. #llm

I have an #AnkerSolix #SmartMeter for which the current sensors were installed in the wrong orientation and therefore I can’t use it.
So, having an electrical engineering degree from >30 years ago, I think I could just reverse the polarity of the wires from sensors to device. But I’m not sure and it’s 240 volts and much too many amperes for me to do this without knowing I wouldn’t roast myself.

So I asked #duckAI and got this. So do I trust GPT5mini when I don’t trust myself?

Author's notes for the short poem (cinquain) by me that appears immediately upthread of this message.

I think this is my first attempt at the cinquain form. I think I did not get the meter right. It's harder than it looks to do that right. But I have limited time today, so this will have to do for a first pass.

I should say that I had a discussion on duck.ai with GPT-5 mini about this poem as I wrote various drafts of what is attached above. I let it do critiques and give me some info on the general form requirements, but I refused to let it do any of the actual writing. I feel very strongly that I want to do my own writing and not have that outsourced to another entity.

I chose to use duck.ai because it promises some degree of privacy. Not that this was a super-private project. But I think even when getting advice, it's useful to think about this question.

However, "we" did usefully discuss word choice and it's pretty good at being able to assess whether the sense of a particular word choice lands in the way I intend, so that was helpful in working through some changes I was contemplating.
