Ah, Fastmail's #pricing fiasco: where they think adding more dollar signs makes their app magically better 🤦♂️. With a labyrinth of menus and an exodus guide from every email provider known to man, they're basically the Indiana Jones of email—minus the adventure 🕵️♂️📧.

Data resilience at Fastmail comes down to a principle our CEO, Bron Gondwana, wrote down over ten years ago. The primary copy is gold. Back it up, replicate it. Principles rarely change, and that one has not.
In April it got tested. A bug wiped mailboxes for 8 accounts. Backups brought all of it back, down to 5 sent emails recovered from temporary files inside Cyrus. The write-up covers what broke, PR numbers and all.

Dear fellow #Fastmail users: if you ever need to remove an email folder you no longer want, please learn from my suffering.
Do it through Fastmail’s web interface rather than Outlook Classic. That way, you can be certain the folder in focus is actually the one you intend to remove.
And be very sure before you do. Unlike some email services, which place a discarded folder under Deleted Items or Trash so you can recover it if you change your mind, Fastmail offers no such safety net.
Once you confirm, that folder and its contents are **gone for good**.
Ask me how I learned this particular lesson. 😂

I really don't care that #Fastmail isn't the perfect 100% EU-sovereign mail solution compared to Gmail.
It's stable, it's got a great interface, it's got an EU datacenter, and IT'S NOT GOOGLE.

I'm gradually coming to the conclusion that to keep #fastmail and #gmail semi in sync, I'm going to have to write something. Ugh.
Imapsync does part of the job, but has limitations. Pimsync does part of the job but has limitations. Native calendar syncing works decent, but may as well do that since it's simpler than email and contacts!
Thankfully there looks to be decent #jmap / #imap / #caldav modules for #golang I can use, but ugh.

I've added support for Fastmail calendars to Ditto Cal.
If you are interested in sync'ing availability between any combination of Google and Fastmail calendars then give it a go.

Oh wow, #Fastmail is finally working on solving their US-dependency issue! Redundancies will still be hosted in the US for now until they've got a second data center location in the EU, but this is fantastic news.

While futzing around with my mailbox (see other post about #gmail / #fastmail ) I ran across a message from 10+ years ago, when I was debating if I should take a new job with #nvidia or not. The email begins:
"This is Jensen Huang. I am the CEO of NVIDIA."
I can't imagine he starts out external emails like that anymore! Crazy times.

Trying out #fastmail to replace #gmail and it seems decent, but despite what their FAQ says the 30 day trial doesn't let you send email, access *DAV resources, or a number of other things.
Made a support request, maybe it'll get responded to in the next few days so I can try those features. I thought "verify with a phone number" would have been sufficient to let me...test email with an email provider. Sigh.
(I really would like to just shut off my SMTP servers vs installing an IMAP one)

#Fastmail introduces #EU data region: #storage in #Amsterdam and more control for users

Heads-up for #Fastmail users - we can now migrate to EU servers!

Amazing news for Fastmail users! Now you can keep your data in the EU. 🇪🇺 Fastmail set up own servers in Amsterdam — own hardware, own software, encrypted at rest. Your primary mail and files now live in the EU. For years your data was stuck in the US. Now you choose: EU or US region.
Honest part: replicas/backups still sit in the US, and as an Australian company they follow Australian law. But where your data primarily lives — your call. https://www.fastmail.com/blog/fastmail-offers-eu-data-region/ #Fastmail #Privacy #GDPR

```
If what you need is a guarantee that your data remains only in the EU, we don’t have that, and we’d rather tell you directly than let you assume otherwise.
Fastmail are following the trend and jumping on the EU-based data bandwagon. Personally, I've had my current Fastmail subscription for 15 years, and it expires next month - but I won't be renewing. I can no longer justify their prices, plus - although their service was good for hosting my multiple own domains - I have no need for 60 GB storage.
Our new Amsterdam servers are live. The EU can now be the primary home for Fastmail data, and like our US locations, it's our own hardware, racked and run by our own people. Nothing rented from a big cloud provider.
Already a customer? Switch regions in your settings. Thinking about it? You choose your region at signup.
Our CEO Bron's post walks through exactly what lives where, because we figure you'd read the fine print anyway.
Friday is the 27th annual SysAdmin Appreciation Day, and our Platform Team Lead wrote about the job. The part we like most: the work is invisible on purpose. If you never notice the servers, networks, and DNS your email lives on, that's the whole point.
We run all of it in-house, so when something breaks, nobody here waits on hold with a vendor. Someone just fixes it.
