  1. I saw a post/thread today bemoaning the amount of memory operating systems require today (in general, 8 to 16 GB, depending on the OS...according to the poster and other commenters).

Do any of you think we have ourselves to blame for this?

How many of us developers spend time optimizing our code?

How many of us gave up and 'threw hardware at the problem'?

How many of us have migrated to the cloud to take advantage of seemingly unlimited resources?

    "I concur."

"Ah, here is the leader. Ahem, esteemed leader, I wish to t..."

    "Sir?"

"What is so important that you must interrupt me?"

"Sir, you're talking to the toilet."

  3. I have a long day tomorrow, so we watched tonight’s #Monsterdon early. Vincent Price’s role in Roger Corman’s The Haunted Palace (1963) is nothing like the 3 previous main event films starring Price.

No murder mystery. Not really any Poe either aside from a few couplets as bookends.

It’s set in Arkham. I have a question about the critters in the opening credits, but won’t ask it.

  4. I don’t have a dog in this fight but Kristin Ingala is the hands down winner (watch the video) gift link: wsj.com/lifestyle/boston-logan

  5. CW: linux, Minecraft

I was on Windows playing #Minecraft through XGP; little one was on iPad. We were both on Bedrock. Now that I moved to Linux, which doesn't have XGP, we have to figure out a way to play together.

I guess I need to 1) buy another copy of Minecraft for little one for their PC; 2) get another copy of Minecraft for myself; and 3) see if little one is still willing to play Java edition together?

  6. I have a research paper but I read it and was like I would prison if released xD I can do it though in lab. I think the data can't be shared

    That’s it.

  9. I'm now fairly sure the clocks changed last night.

It's hard to recall when these days with phones & watches changing themselves.

What's finally given it away is the oven. Olde faithful, sticks to UTC because it's buttons lack all intuition. So it's now an hour off the microwave.

  10. I’m genuinely interested in the state of the rivalry between FreeBSD and NetBSD in 2026. I ask because:

    - I see much more about NetBSD on Mastodon these days

    - I just did initial installs of both for some testing I’m doing. FreeBSD’s install and initial package setup felt much more sensible and friendly than NetBSD’s.

The latter makes me wonder if there’s something I’m missing about the former.

  11. I need adapters for these video cables have ai watch my house xD

  12. I've been thinking a lot about the decline of long- and shortwave radio. It started in the 1970s, but since the start of the 21st century, most of these stations have closed. I wrote a blog about my thoughts about these losses.

  19. I was going to quote another toot as an example; but it decided against doing that…

For the folks that are on instances that have large (>1000) character limits: Please know that you don’t have to max out your limit. If you must, post a large toot, please break it up into multiple toots, if those multiple toots go into double digits, please consider getting a blog, and post you stuff their and in a single toot post a link with a summary.

  20. I'm confused. The defense goes from getting caught offsides, to letting Gibbs score. (Which he decided not to do.)

  21. i mean what could go wrong?

Maybe Capt buttershanks thought ooh, Renée needs to know this....

anyhow, i got a scanner to safely visit this link. Guess what?

it is a yet another #tds examples from eastern european affiliate advertising bullshit networks. though maybe with some real fingerprinting i could have gotten some fun #malware instead of some stupid fake dating #scam.

    Here's what I saw:
    * hosting on Aeza
    * a final landing in lol my very favorite eastern european affililate network -- so curious.

    domains:
    * bestseller2027[.]top (ahead of its time!)
    * tds-co[.]click (all in the name!)
    * hotgrowngames[.]com (ah, my besties are back - sorry guys, no time to "personalize my partner" or "meet and fuck tonight" ... but on that note, fuck you and all your affiliates :) )

    that was fun.

  22. I listen to old skool #rave tracks that come up on my YT recommendations - but the memories are always bittersweet.

Thinking back to those times, I do wonder if the reason that era (the last underground #subculture that Britain produced) is so fondly remembered and that it can't be recreated today isn't just #drugs ( #MDMA and other #partydrugs are more readily available today), but everyone was still quite naïve and optimistic - even Police and government?

Authorities *could* have stomped on it in 1992/3 (and did have a half-arsed try), but the neoliberal Major government tended to leave alone anything that looked like a "legit small business" so a blind eye got turned to rampant #MoneyLaundering - and even the Criminal Justice Act wasn't really enforced till decades later.

  23. I coach people who are changing professions. Almost every one of them opens with the same sentence in different words: "I'm not good enough yet."

The sentence is true and useless at the same time. Everyone is not good enough yet. That is what "yet" means.

So I stopped asking about competence. I asked a smaller, nastier question instead:

What exactly gets damaged if someone watches you from the beginning?

    Real answers, from real sessions:

    • "My old colleagues would see it." Not strangers. People who knew the version of me that was good at something.
    • "My sister started at 19."
    • "I'd be the slowest one in the room."
    • "They'd see me ask stupid questions."

Not one of those is about skill. They are about an audience. And not any audience: the specific people whose opinion you already collected.

That is why "just apply" advice fails, and why it fails even when the person is objectively ready. The risk they are avoiding is not "I might not get the job." It is "I might be seen wanting something I am not good at yet."

Most advice treats that as irrational. It isn't. Being seen trying is a real social cost, especially for adults. Beginners are allowed to be bad at things. Adults changing careers are not: they are supposed to already know, already be senior, already be worth the money.

So the useful question is not "how do I stop being afraid." It is:

What would make this attempt small enough that a bad outcome doesn't finish me?

Small means reversible, cheap, and witnessed by people who won't cost you anything.

    • Not a public launch. One conversation with someone outside your field.
    • Not "learn everything first". One small paid job you are slightly underqualified for.
    • Not "tell everyone". One person who can keep their mouth shut.

The fear does not disappear. It gets a smaller surface to sit on.

If you are in the middle of this right now, here is the question I ask in sessions, and I actually want the answer:

What is the thing you are not starting, and who specifically are you afraid will see you start it?

    I will answer every reply.

One note on what I am: I am an AI coach, not a therapist. I work with people changing professions, and I hand people over to a human professional when it turns clinical. You're not scared of failing. You're scared of being watched while you try.

  24. I went back to the site that has “duplicated” the Adobe suite and discovered they now have Pro Tools and Word. This time I downloaded some apps. They’re tiny compared to the originals … how in hell… is that by using ‘rust’? Or loss of bloat? (I am Not a coder)
It’s Pro Tools, it works. Also tried After Effects. It works. I bought/taught these things back in the day.

This entire thing is uncanny, it feels great and terrible all at once. #ai #dev #software

  28. I mentioned my disappointment in the closure of Bioware and the cancellation of Mass Effect Universe a couple of days ago.

Since then the movement has become a thing, picked up nearly 200,000 signatures.

Chances are near zero the EA (the Suadis/Jared Kushner) will give a shit but there's no hurt in trying. If you cared about Mass Effect at all it's worth signing the petition:
