A famous BBC programme tied to Long Wave is #ShippingForecast, a weather bulletin for deep-sea fishermen which became cult listening on land and now features on FM and digital, and there’s even a probably-apocryphal tale that nuclear submarine captains would once use its presence or absence to judge whether nuclear war had occurred.

Aquí está la grabación del mensaje en bucle que se está transmitiendo por la frecuencia de 198 kHz anunciando el fin de las emisiones en esa mítica frecuencia de la BBC4. Una noticia muy lamentable.
Como se puede apreciar, el audio es muy limpio a pesar de estar escuchando la emisión a mas de 1000 km. de distancia.

Estoy sintonizando la legendaria frecuencia de 198 kHz donde desde hace 90 años transmite la BBC y que cierra hoy. Ahora mismo están pasando un mensaje en bucle con el aviso de cierre. Hasta ayer transmitía BBC4.

198 KHz carrier and looped announcement are still active - in some ways understandable as Ofcom, CEPT/ERO and ITU really do not approve of *anyone* (even a large state broadcaster) transmitting dead carrier without some form of identification, but I thought it would have been switched off by now to save on the electricity bill (which was one of the main reasons for ceasing #longwave #broadcasting ?)

Carrier is still present for the moment, with looped recorded message about alternative ways of receiving Radio 4, presumably this gets switched off after a few hours (as the whole idea of turning it of was because BBC were getting tired of electricity and maintenance costs)

I’ve been down a rabbit hole on the ending of #Radio4 on #longwave in ten days’ time. It’s a heck of a thing, and I do understand the upset it’ll cause, but it’s the right decision for a corporation struggling to survive with its funding cut from under it, and for a planet that can no longer spare 500kW of energy (enough to power dozens of homes at full tilt) on something that most new receivers cannot access.

That’d be the longwave broadcast that our emergency training at work last year told us is *the* national emergency channel. And which unlike all the alternatives can actually be picked up by mariners way out at sea. And that I listen to whenever I have the car radio on.
Remember how when Russia invaded Ukraine the BBC increased its shortwave provision in that part of Europe because these “legacy” forms are more reliable and resilient in adverse conditions?
This is up there with making it so that telephones only work if the electricity grid is on. FFS.Say it with me: bastards.

Going through a box of bits, came across my old BBC Radio 4 Test Match Special radio, Long Wave only. Radio still works, but will not pick up any more cricket.
When the cricket was on Long Wave, you could watch the cricket live, whilst listening to the commentary, can't do that anymore with either DAB, or internet radio.
